3D Anime

Right, since the whole world seems to be moving in the 3D direction,

1. Do you think that it's possible (or soon to be possible) to view anime in 3D?
2. Would you want to watch anime in 3D?

By 3D, I don't mean this or this, I'm talking about like how they show it in theaters(think Cameron's Avatar). Images that 'pop out', that have a sorta depth to it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind. I guess it'd make it more realistic, makes you a part of the whole experience. But then, you'd have to wear those stupid ass glasses, and it might give you headaches, and all that crap about 3D.

Thoughts, anyone?

FOR THE RECORD, I'm fine with both, but prefer 2D.

1. I have no clue if its possible to view anime in 3D. But I'm thinking its a "no", at least for now.

2. I can't say I would enjoy 3D anime. As someone who needs glasses to enjoy a movie that's not on there laptop 3D goggles would be a hindrance. I can't say I particularly enjoy 3D films. When done right they can be amazingly good(Like Avatar), when done bad, well, its not pretty.

I don't think the will do it or not, but hell. I'd love it.

I do wear glasses, so i see your point. But considering Nintendo has announced the 3DS, which shows 3D images that don't require glasses, who's to say that other Japanese companies won't figure it out soon enough?

I'd watch a full anime movie in 3D. I wouldn't watch an entire series in 3D.

Yeah, but imagine the time and money it would take to develop that. Its much easier and cheaper to just make glasses.

I'm sure that it's possible, but I'm not sure if I want it. I don't even know if I can see 3D movies, (because I have motion sickness and I heard that those who have it often get sick when watching them so I've been too afraid), but my life isn't any worse because of it. I'll stick to 2D.

The world's changing, man. They're really going all out on this 3D thing. 3D movies, 3D TV's, 3D videogames, my local newspapers' have even been printing out 3D ads. If they want people to accept it, they gotta make it affordable.

Never got the whole 3D thing. So your going to see a movie, wear funky glasses, paid more than the regular one just to say wow that was cool.

I wear glasses man, those 3d glasses being put on top of them just make it uncomfortable and seeing shit in 3d just gives me a headache anyways. It seems like a pointless addition to any movie and should stay in fuckin disney theme park rides where it belongs.

As long as I have to wear those silly glasses, NO.

Not just because they're silly and awful, but I don't want to put those things on top of my glasses, or get contact lenses just because of such stupid crap.

That said, if they managed to pull it off without glasses, I'd watch it. It might be a little disturbing experience, but also one of that kind that you talk about years after.

Keep in mind that anime is cel shaded -- a uber simplified method of shading.

So, while it is possible to make a 3D anime image, it would still look flat. Either that, or it doesn't look like an anime and is shaded realistically, rather than cel-shaded. A cel-shaded 3d image is a waste of effort -- it will still look flat because of the shading.

In other words, it will look like Miku Hatsune's live concert (which was quite impressive, actually), or a 3d version of pixar movies, or a 3d version of Final Fantasy, rather than a 3d version of a cel-shaded anime.

and it didn't work, images stayed flat. But then i tried with these 2,



and it kinda does work, you can see the pop out. So, if animated, shouldn't it work too?

Sounds interesting but I wouldn't always watch it in 3D. It seems like a hassle.

I like 3D movies, but I don't think it would work with anime... I mean, it's drawn in 2D, how are you going to make it 3D without the several individual objects being flat?

Also I'm against 3D television and such. 3D should remain in cinemas IMO. Srsly why does EVERYTHING need to be in 3D? I don't care if it goes beyond the usual gimmick, but please, only on the big screen.

Contrary to what everyone is spouting I don't consider stereoscopic displays 3D.
They give a sense of depth and field but you can only focus on what the original (virtual if it's artificial) cameras have been pointed at.

...if combined with head-tracking this might suffice to do good VR.

However as is, I'd rather wait for true holographic displays since so far what I've seen it amounts to a gimmick that gives a lot of people headache without revolutionizing the medium or even adding directors the chance to add substantially more to their work.

Same as with the hentai in 3D topic here: I just don't like 3D stuff. It gives me headaches and whatnot and I really don't see the appeal in it.
