i seem to be stumbling across alot of them lately one to be included are:
The slayers (it looks like it belongs in the 80's)
Ninja Scroll - the movie
monster city shinjuku (or summin like that)
appleseed (original)
the reason i bring this topic up is because i was wondering if anyone actualy found these entertaining or jus watched it for the art work ...feel free to comment

I think Slayers and Ninja Scroll are '90s anime.
Anyway, there's a lot of good retro anime, quite a few classics.
I still watch them, even if some are before my time.

I really enjoyed watching Slayers on Funimation even with its retro animation. I'm also enjoying Hunter + Hunter (With the exception of the voice acting) on Funimation as well. Dunno why but good old anime is... good xD ...because for an old anime to be good it can't be because of amazing detail or shit like that it just has to be about what the show offers. Slayers was a great laugh and series.
Can't say the same for the others you posted since I can't recall ever seeing them xD

Just throwing some out there, but Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkou (course these are all Takahashi Rumiko animes but still very well done.)

watch the unedited version of urotsukidoji and be satisfied.
you demanding sex appeal upon such a heart rendin tale is outrageous! its these simple and very human tales are what japanese theatre does best!

Anyone seen Gal Force? It's from 86 or something, pretty awesome (although it's probably a chunk of nostalgia inthere too when it comes to my opinion).

I find anything pre-1990 really old anime that I don't usually watch. Gundam, Macross, and Akira are some known examples of 80s anime works.

It's nearly impossible for me to watch stuff that old at this point. Ain't saying it's bad or anything and I praise those few who introduced me to anime very highly but the overall standards, production quality and my personal tastes changed too drastically I'm afraid.
To state an example, I tried to pick up Legend of the Galactic Heroes recently (a big ass series that aired between 1988 and 1997) and even though the show looked awesome in reviews, scores and shit, I only managed to last 4 episodes.
Currently, the year 1997/1998 usually marks the borderline for shows I might consider picking up.
BTW - Slayers and Ninja Scroll are indeed 90' productions and I enjoyed both.

Man, I can't believe no one has mentioned Fist of the North Star. And I do mean the original one, and now that crappy remake version that they made years back. Now, that right there was a classic anime from the 80's.
I would also say the original Bubblegum Crisis too, but I think those were made in the early 90's.

Curious and Wondering
I was born in the late 80's so at that time my country only showed mecha anime and/or sentai shows from Japan. My very first 80's anime were Mazinger Z and Daimos.
I was only able to catch up on The Slayers in the early 90's (I think The Slayers are a 90's anime and not 80's... pls correct me if I'm wrong) since the government stations decided to pick up the popular shows from other countries to get in the 5-15 age demographic the other stations were dominating.

lets face it..the 80s was the time for badly written hentai and mecha mecha mecha.
alot of the people indentify with is 90s anime and thats a fact! it obvious to tell that alot of you are having a hard time connecting to the 80s period.

Well, although I was alive in the 80's (yes, I'm old; well, according to Jessica Simpson anyway.) I really didn't watch anime then. The crappified, Americanized, dumbed down Speed Racer turned me off to the genre for a while.
Anyway, some of the ones I liked from that era were the Original Dirty Pair, Lupin III films (although he actually started in the 70's,) Ranma 1/2, Akira, Transformers and Kimigure Orange Road.
