I am a slowpoke on this one but I just started watching Akagi and I am delaying the next hentai update because I cannot stop watching it.

I know what you mean. I never thought an anime about mahjong would be that good, but I'm pleasantly surprised. Kaiji is kinda disappointing so far though.

Ah Akagi.
One of my favorite anime ever, along with Monster and Princess Tutu. It is quite amazing how an anime about Mahjong can be so awesome. I watched episode one to three, then learned Mahjong from Wikipedia and mahjongtime.com and watched them again. And then went on with it.
Akagi's character is what makes it so amazing, he always manages to come up with something unexpected and striking. The only thing I disliked was how Akagi wasn't allowed to even lose a single game in the match vs Washizu, that limits the possibilities by a lot.
Many people complain that the match vs Washizu was too long, I mean the manga is still ongoing and he is STILL playing Washizu, but I think it is very much like Akagi to play such a long and intense match.

You have great taste Jacob. I ran across Akagi a while back and if The Triad had've had it all released when I found it I would've marathoned the whole show at once.
I'm also fairly good at mahjong. I play on mahjongglobal.net every once and a while and I usually either end up winning or tying. I'm not good enough to get any special hands though (and I think it's also a little harder to do when you're playing people that are just cobbling together cheap hands 90% of the time anyway) so I tend to stick to basic ones. Most people play Hong Kong or Chinese rules even though they do have Japanese Modern.
If You like Akagi you should definitely check out Kaiji. It's still in the first half of its t.v run (episode 7 is out) and it's pretty good. It's different from Akagi since the Kaiji doesn't start out as the baddest motherfucker on the block and he's actually learning how to gamble well. The first arc so far has been rock paper scissors though so as awesome as it is and will be it's also kinda whack at the same time.

My friend actually just forced me to start playing mahjong, and last night I was up all night with him and some friends playing (which is also why there was no update x_x) But I am loving it.
And Kaiji is also awesome, although he isn't nearly as bad ass as Akagi.

I think that mahjongtime and mahjongglobal run the same system. If you go to both sites and compare them it looks like they have the same picture of one mahjong table but at different angles.

Another good new board game anime I thought I should recommend is Shion no Oh. The board game being played is shougi. And I just realized something about myself, I watch a lot board game animes but never know how to play them, it's sad.

Akagi is like what Hikaru no Go would have been if Sai was inside Hikaru the whole time and Hikaru was more badass than Chuck Norris and a Yakuza boss rolled into one.
And while i do like Shion no Ou, it's kind of more about the characters than Shougi. They don't show as much of the moves as they do for either Hikaru or Akagi so if you just want to learn another Japanese game then you're s.o.l on that.

Akagi is one of the best anime out there, its better if you have actually played japanese mahjong before hand so some things might be more clear, though i started playing hong kong mahjong ages ago and then got into japanese mahjong a week before watching akagi :(

I prefer playing at http://tenhou.net/ , it's not as slow paced as mahjongtime or mahjongglobal and it runs on Japanese rules only.
I don't mind the absence of registering or chat windows at all, I don't play mahjong for that.

Jap only and no chat windows? Sign me up. Oh wait, nosign up needed either? Thats great. The only reason I signed up to the other site was because i had to. I also have to re-register every few days when I run out of free play tokens so it's just a pain in the ass. People only ever use the chat to spam "LFG Hong Kong rules" bullshit anyway.
