In 2016, a meltdown of a nuclear power plant creates a big catastrophe in Tokyo. 20 years later, the city has become a ghost town due to the high levels of radiation. From that area a distress signal is received. The Self Defense forces dispatch three girls from the special unit Coppelion to search for survivors. But why aren't they wearing any protection against radiation?

It wasn't bad... I was kind of surprised they almost killed off the one girl though. The environments looked nice too.

It looks good. Almost like they put anime characters on top of great artwork instead of putting a background behind great characters. Still not entirely sure what happened to (Tokyo? They were saying "old capital" which normally means Kyoto but the Tokyo Tower was shown so its Tokyo right?). I was expecting them to have superpowers or something but the girls being relatively normal will make their travels much more suspenseful in a "Into the New World" kind of way.

That was pretty fucking dark. The series seems like it could get interesting, I'm looking forward to seeing what the girls will come across. The backgrounds were gorgeous. Great first ep, looking forward to more.

I remember watching this at AnimeExpo and I'm convinced that this anime is very gimmicky considering the unrealistic premise but origins as a realistic seinen. I fear that there is the possibility of something so absurd happening that it completely breaks the tone of the anime, but I still think that Coppelion hits hard in the suspense and animation direction department so fingers crossed.

Watched the first episode and I couldn't help but think it would be nice if the "stupidity" wasn't always in our faces.
Spoiler:
I mean, high school girl outfits? Really? You're going to send girls, on foot, with schoolbags and skirts into a ruined, irradiated city? No bicycles, no hiking bags, no sensible outfits?


On another note, the animators couldn't seem to make up their minds about how thick to make the character outlines.

I had the same thoughts pretty much.

This anime easily gets scenery porn of the season award. I'm really looking forward to the next episode.

Did anyone else realize this is eerily similar to Japan's Fukushima meltdown situation? This could actually be Japan's future, just sayin'.

this anime was supposed to air in the summer season (2011) but the tsunami hit on the 11th of March and such the show got canceled do to the reactor meltdown. Japan was like #toosoon

Lol well guess it was a good decision. But Fukushima's still fucked anyway, when shit like this keeps happening.

If this is the direction this anime is going to take then it'll be a good one, until now it's just a bit weird. Can't wait until we get more personal info about the characters. It was nice when Aoi explained they were genetically enginereed.

This anime is pretty overdramatic, but then again it originated from an overdramatic seinen manga. Food for thought.

So far, the anime's doing fine. These girls being trained to do these sorts of things from birth seems a little saddening. Maybe they walked around in school uniforms to feel more like the girls around their age. Or they probably had hinted that already in the anime. The recent episode seems a little bit depressing, but was interesting.

On a side note, I love the opening and ending themes.

Im liking this show but Aoi is really bringing it down, I wish she would do something besides cry all the time.

It appeared her power/special ability is strongly related to her mental state but she really needs to be pushed to achieve that state. I don't get why they showed a small preview of what her power is, it would have been more entertaining if she just uses it to take down that spider after it destroys NoSense.

Yeah, I know. But this is fiction, so the producers/writers can do whatever they want w/ how will the characters will be (although I really like your logic on that part). I suppose the only logical explanation for this is to draw more viewers to watch the show: it's more catered to the young folks (and young at heart) and it will make them relate more since the characters on the show are...young.

But if you are going to think about it, aren't the majority of the [anime] shows they are airing almost always have kids to teenagers who are the main protagonists, and you seldom see protagonists who are in their 30's as main leads? (save for Usagi Drop)
