I remember seeing this episode on Adult Swim about Kenpachi's past and really that got me to read the manga because that just seemed like such an interesting prospect.
I started the manga with Rukia at her execution because I had watched the anime consistently up to there but I never came across Kenpachi's past.
Was there a part of the manga about Kenpachi's past or was that simply an anime filler?

All I remember is them talking about how he got his captain position and how he met his little pink haired partner...but then again, one of the resident bleach experts probably has more info.
