Here's another series I thought was worth introducing - Bokurano (or Bokura no)
It might not be action packed or funny but I hope there are those who will appreciate it.
The show finished airing over a year ago and though it didn't raise much hype, I think it's an excellent watch for those who like deep, tragic shows with a solid (but not too hard to swallow) dose of psychological and sci-fi/mecha elements. It comes from the producers of Gantz, Basilisk and Red Garden (should give some idea to those who watched any of those) and though it's from Gonzo I prefer to think about it as a good-Gonzo production.
The series tells a tale of 15 kids who, during their summer vacation, are tricked into participating in a mysterious game. What they don't know (and what will soon turn their world upside down) is the fact that the events in the game are actually real and that they will be putting their own lives at the table...
As I said before - the anime is fairly tragic so you should expect casualties. The very design of the show is also unique since every episode is usually dedicated to exploring and developing a different character. Believe me - after a few episodes you will have your favorite character(s) and will be rooting hard that nothing bad happens to him/her/them. Another intriguing detail are the rules of the 'game' witch the kids try do discover and use to aid their survival.
Also, as mentioned, this in part a mecha anime so there will be several appropriate battles with corresponding destruction and chaos :)
The art and animation are good IMO (nothing to spectacular but they complement the mood) and the music is excellent. Especially the OP:
Screenshots are hard to come by so these are the best I could find.
Spoiler:
From what I've read, some people were disappointed with the show after following the manga but if you appreciate more than just fanservice and humor to anime I strongly advise to give it a try.
ps:
Since the show may be hard to find I would advice to get it via IRC from Triad's archive bot at #the-triad@irc.enterthegame.com
I actually tried this half a year ago...(browsed through the first few pages of the manga to see what it's like)
if you're interested in the series...PLEASE REFRAIN FROM READING THIS major spoilers!!!
Spoiler:
and just by the end of the 1st episode, one of the kids(the first chosen pilot) died. after browsing over the next couple of episodes, I've just lost all interest.
and PLEASE DON'T READ THIS! personal outburst!!!
Spoiler:
I don't really want to say this... but I just find the plot dreadful and unreasonable. First, why must kids be chosen? why not adults? Who's the sick inventor of this horrible GAME?! how can the cycle be broken?! Why mustn't be the rules explained at first?(because no one will sign up if they knew!)
Why does it have to be a Lose-Lose battle?!(pilots from both sides dies after the battle anyway) and last but not the least, typical GONZO! (this is the kind of series that GONZO loves to adapt most of the time!) expect a lot of casualties! (GONZO just loves this kind of plot wherein they can KILL almost every single damn character! ~WTF~
and the lesson of the story is DON'T TRUST STRANGERS SO EASILY AND MOST CERTAINLY DON'T SIGN A CONTRACT WITHOUT KNOWING EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!
@dasiek
sorry about that...I just felt sharing my thoughts, just IMO.
pm me if you think that my post is unneeded, I'll gladly take it down or just remove the ill contents.
ed: thanks for understanding. 8) you're a level-headed guy, unlike me!
I'm highly emotional and I certainly can go from calm into sudden rage in an instant.
~I admire you more than before
Spoiler:
when you said that you'll even vote a cammel rather than Ranka! ROFL!
2nd ed: @dasiek
Spoiler:
NO WAY IN HELL that I'm a second you!
"I'm eccentric" (I don't even understand myself sometimes)
exmpl: I like doujinshis just as much as I hate them!
Chill hermit, I don't mind. 8) I value every personal opinion as long as it's properly phrased.
As for some of your issues with the series, I get the feeling that you didn't finish it. Am I right ?
A lot is either explained or at least given more sense and meaning in the latter parts IMO. I agree that it's fairly easy to find some flaws but the most important aspect of the show - young minds trying to either escape or bravely face cruel destiny - is executed excellently.
Besides, it's good we finally disagree on a title. I was beginning to think there's a second me out there :P
