I can't remember when I first thought of this. Most likely in my preteens or something.
Kids always seem very independent. Not like Pokemon or whatever. Example, in Yugioh, Yugi and all his friends have families and stuff and then like this little girl, english dubbed Rebbecca, goes all the way to Japan by herself for a card game. Can't really think of anymore examples at the moment
Not only that but kids are way too intelligent. Watching Ep4 of Hanamaru Kindergarten, Anzu just gave a brief summary of some manga thing and holy jesus, she has a vocabulary and analysis of a middle schooler/high schooler.
I'm not really understanding how people can think kids have a high intelligence. Or maybe people just completely forget what it was like to be a kid. What do you think?
I completely agree, though I think more of shows like Naruto, that had 12-year-olds flying through trees and fighting to the death. When I was 12, I didn't want to run up a hill, and these kids are fucking risking their lives and living in forests? It's crazy.
But it's necessary. Shonen series are marketed to young boys, and they want to see someone like them. Boys don't really want to read series about middle-aged men, nor do they want to see series about the typical life on a 12-year-old. Apparently, the same applies to anime fans of all ages.
One thing that the majority of anime fandom seems to have in common is a hatred for Shinji Ikari (from Neon Genesis Evangelion) and his pussy nature. However, his behavior is the main reason I like the series, because it's real. If I found a random 14-year-old and told him that he had to risk his life and pilot a giant robot against monsters, he'd shit himself. The average 14-year-old couldn't even handle the responsibility of having a job and taking care of a family; how would he react to something that would made a 35-year-old with a job and family shake with fear? But all people see is an annoying character. (As if real 14-year-olds aren't annoying as all hell.)
It's all about suspension of disbelief. You've just gotta be willing to put logic and reason aside for the sake of the story. Sometimes, it works. Other times, it doesn't. Don't ask me why I watched it, but in the series Spider Riders, the character of Hunter goes to an Incan or Mayan temple or something, based on what was written in his grandfather's notes. How the hell a kid who could be no more than 16 (and that's pushing it) got out of his native country is beyond me, let alone how he got through the dangerous jungle to the temple. In that case, the series is asking too much of the viewer; it's too insane to expect a child to be able to do such a thing without his parents (who are either dead, missing, or just don't care about their son). But we can accept a kid like Naruto being a ninja because in his world, every kid is a ninja and is trained practically from birth.
Alot of anime with kids running around acting like adults isnt a real surprise to me. Like Evangelion Shinji is what id like to call a real boy cuz In Naruto, Of course we arnt scared of fighting other crazed ninjas to get to our impossible dream of becoming Hokage.
Ahh goonies, good times, I learned a valuable lesson from that movie. lol.
Do teenagers in your terms count as children? Teenagers are in a stage of major growth and early devlopment is the reason why many teen protagonists get away with instant upgrades and etc. As for children, I agree completely. When I was that age, I would shit my pants if there was a dangerous situation going on instead of acting the hero.
I think a great deal of it is the character fooling themselves.
A good example is Fullmetal Alchemist (which I just finished). Through the series, Edward and Alphonse grapple with their expectations of the world, after being forced out of their "happy home". They get by, day to day, not by being adults, but by acting rational, and falling on their face multiple times.
Sometimes subtly you can see the artists alluding to this change, and sometimes people outright say "you can't do that."
Isnt there a power ranger thats a 12 year old kid?
I do believe there was. He became the Blue Ranger after the glasses guy went to space or something. I thought it was pretty ridiculous, even when I was a kid.

You're referring to Justin Stewart from "Power Rangers Turbo" right?
Listen to when he morphs, it sounds like he's saying, "Shit into turbo" instead of "Shift into turbo".
