K-on! and Woody Allen

First of all I want to apologize if the title seems misleading.

Just today I watched the first episode of K-on! I was unimpressed to say the least, however when they played Tsubasa wo kudasai (Evangelion 2.0) I felt compelled not to drop this show and see where this takes me.

While I was watching I remembered the hype surrounding it, many people told me to watch it, while others told me it was going to be a waste of time, thus I came to understand that K-on! is like Woody Allen, either you hate it, or love it (I hate Woody Allen, his movies suck).

I do not interact a lot with other users (being a loner it's hard for me to talk with people online, so I'd rather do it in person, don't ask I don't suck talking to people in real life, but I suck talking to someone else on the net), however a particular fakkuza comes to memory whenever K-on is mentioned. I'm talking about animefreak_usa (who actually was kind enough to give me pretty decent links to download this show, else I wouldn't be seeing it right now). This guy seems to really hate K-on, and I mean he would probably be the author of a K-on guro manga if it were up to him (right, I'm probably exaggerating) while others absolutely love this show because it's fab!

Me on the other hand, I've not seen so much as to give you an actual judgement regarding it, so I want to know what are your thoughts on K-on! do you love it, hate it, or have mixed feelings?

I don't hate it, but I don't feel like watching it

I love K-ON, But I can see how so many people hate it.

But why do you love it? (please keep spoilers to a minimum :P)

I love the art style and I find it funny, I like the whole "slice of Life High School stories". They are light and if I dont feel like watching dramatic animes I can watch them and relax.

The only thing I know about K-On! are the doujin I've seen here on FAKKU! and maybe other sites....

Pretty much the same reason why I like this series as well, the girls expressions can be overly cute at times and it is a relaxing show to take in. Also get to know some of the more real Japanese customs and realism from this series.

I've never understood the intense feelings, one way or the other, for K-ON. I enjoy the show because it makes me laugh and go "Dawwww~" I didn't expect anything from the show, and I didn't see it as a hallmark series in any way. It's funny and cute. That's it.

To reference another comedian filmmaker, K-ON is like a Mel Brooks movie. It's chiefly a comedy but may have some other elements that make it enjoyable (or uninteresting, depending on the viewer). You can have a great time talking to your friends about which parts you enjoyed the most, or you and your friends can sit around and say that it sucked, but there is absolutely no reason to direct an abnormal amount of hate towards it (because that takes a lot more effort than is necessary if you simply didn't find it funny), come up with an elaborate list of reasons why it sucked, or write a 10,000 word essay describing what makes it so great. If you like it, then you like it. If you don't, then you don't. There is no reason to go any deeper than that.

Think about it - would anyone write a college dissertation on Spaceballs, in favor of it or against it?

Cute girls play instruments and do silly things. Nothing more.

I came to enjoy the show because the characters are just simply fun to watch. There really isn't a major over arching plot to this. Just some Japanese girls in high school who form a school band that are the focus of an anime in which the endings of the show will tease you.

I originally thought K-On was a show about a group of High School girls who make it big as a band and go on to be a more light-hearted version of Nana, an anime that I believe I watch 3x+ episodes of before accidentally dropping it. I never really got into K-On until I stumbled upon this picture of Sawako which drove me into finding out who the artist was and then anime the character was from(Toten for those who want to know)



I stumbled across a K-On wiki entry on Sawako and, as you could imagine, was a bit let down by the original characters design. That is until I scrolled down a bit and found the entries other pictures of Sawako and then promptly went on to read the page, got intrigued by the character, and went on to go watch K-On (First Season and Second season were over by the time I took interest).

I found myself vastly in awe with the show. Never in the years I had been watching anime and reading manga had I ever sat down and, with intent, watch a slice of life anime. I had always searched for the next big action anime of some form with guns and super powers. I never would have thought that I would be watching an anime because a bunch of characters are just having a real good time being friends and trying to solve the Earth destroying problem of what type of cake should be had on this day.

I look back at K-On and think to myself, "I would like to see more of this. K-On was really special." K-On is not the Holy Grail of Awesome. It's just a show that if you get into you will find yourself falling in love with, hopefully without the need to lick your monitor or to create a shrine in the name of Mio.

The whole basis is that K-On is just a simple slice of life anime with girls who just can't stop being cute and making me laugh. It also is probably one of the many anime's that you could probably show to a highly rational person and... umm. You know what, this is one of those anime's I'd show to my mother because she would enjoy this as well.

Now if you excuse me, I have to investigate the freezer.

[font=segoe print bold]I love it too. Most people watching K-ON want to see an epic adventure with awsome music and bla bla bla..... I just wanted to have a good time and have a "DDDAWWWWWWWWW" overload. I got exaclty that.

I like it.

1) Good artwork. Not the characters (which is average), but the _extreme_ detail that goes into the props, backgrounds, and the supporting cast.

2) The characters are pretty fucking cute.

3) Slice of life is hard to write. It has no overarching plot to go with it. Keeping a readers'/audiences' interest without a plot? Go ahead. Try it. Good luck.

To put it another way, I'd give my left kidney to be able to write like that -- characters that people care about.



I like it, but I don't think its the greatest thing since sliced bread. I prefer Azumanga Daioh's writing, although K-on beats it hands down for the artwork.
