Macross Frontier - Which Girl and Why?

So I have been very behind the times, but just recently finished Macross Frontier and after watching what I thought relatively was a very good show I was disappointed with the ending. Many questions were left unanswered, like why the hell does grace sprout tentacles, but most of all I was annoyed by Alto making no decision towards which girl to be with in the end.

Im a Ranka fan over Sheryl, personally, and I never really liked sheryl even after they tried to redeem her as the show went on. Instances like episode 11 (alto's birthday) where ranka told her what her present to alto was going to be and then she deliberately sabotaged it by inviting Alto to the zentraedi planet is an example of why I disliked her.

Anyways, the question I have is which girl do you prefer and why? This forum isn't meant for any character to be bashed if anyone chooses to reply, so try to avoid that.

Lastly, I can understand that they had no conclusion to the love triangle to not upset fans, although i would have preferred an answer in general over no answer and to promote the two movies that will be coming out. Does anyone believe in the second movie a decision may be made when they stop trying to make money off of the show?

P.S. just my thoughts, but if i was to try and name only two main characters from macross frontier instead of three it would be Alto and Ranka (over sheryl) because ranka is much more central to the plot. Thats why I was really surprised that they did not have alto choose ranka in the end . I also severely doubt that a decision will be made in the movies, but heres to hoping. Rather have sheryl picked despite not liking here than nobody.

For me, the best girl for Alto is Ranka.
It's not that I dislike Sheryl.

She has expressed her feelings for alto through her songs a number of times. Though it's sad that alto haven't realized this a lot sooner. Ranka is caring and loving.
I'm also a bit disappointed for alto being indecisive on who of the two girls he would pick.

Even though the open dislike towards Sheryl is easier to run across, she still owns Ranka's butt in 90% of all the popularity rankings ... I smell sore losers ^_^

You people can have your Alto x Ranka though since I hardly cared about either and wished them a gruesome death more than once. The only frontline character with any kind of distinctive personality, boldness and development is mine till death (or waifu reset) due us part.

i didnt see another thread with this topic in mind, so i figured it would work fine here, and still think it does. I wouldn't say i or the other person are sore losers cuz there was no winner at the end of the show except alto with his flying (hah). As for popularity polls that is just w/e. the writer of the show didnt even write episode 18 (maybe 19)-24 simply because he didn't know what to do with sheryl's character since he himself didn't like her that much. that is why you see a more prominent personality shift in her during those episodes.

Whoever wrote particular episodes or whether she's the director's favorite should hardly influence one's opinion about a character. All we can judge (based on individual preference) is a complete package presented to us throughout the show and I'm doing just that. No matter how fun and flashy they may seem, MF's characters suffer from being fairly shallow and unoriginal (and fucking indecisive), making Sheryl's attitude and development really stand out.
To each his own but I simply can't shake the feeling that I've seen far too many Ranka-alikes in all my years of watching anime.

Sheryl emits far more sex appeal, maturity and confidence which is also more to my preference than Ranka's constant bashfulness and loli image.

lol im too use in seeing sheryl-alikes in doujins so she seems unoriginal to me as well. however i in general have always liked the "cuter" characters. such as the short haird twins in lucky star and clannad (not that ive ever watched clanned). Im just not a fan of controlling/domineering women which is a role played by sheryl thru most of the show, even somewhat in the end.

Looking at Ranka is reminding me of Nyan Nyan song. lol

Personally, I'll go with Ranka because Sheryl comes off as a complete bitch. Then again, I was always a fan of the underdog.

but out of these two I would've probably gone with Ranka because, well I've always had a thing for the cute ''undeveloped'' character rather than the adult / big breasted ones, that and your point that she destroyed Rankas birthday present to Alto.

i'll choose sheryl, simple, just because she's hotter than ranka i think

Sheryl, she may be a bitch at first but she gets better later on and she is NOT a annoying crybaby like Ranka. Alto X Sheryl.

I want both Ranka and sheryl for different reasons. Ranka to me seems like the better personality, and is adorable. but Sheryl is just plain haaawwt.

Oh, I'd go for Sheryl hands down. Ranka's cute and all, but she's still a little kid. Sheryl's much more mature, both in looks and personality.

Don't be fooled by Ranka being the "I'm the cute and MAIN heroine" role. Such roles have appeared all too many times in so...SO many animes. please get sick of them already.
