NGE Discussion

first of all I would like to warn everyone one THIS THREAD WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS

Ok so a while back in an anime recommendation thread called "what r d must watch anime" a few us got into a discussion about d ending and basic story plot of NGE and well we stopped cus it was off subject and I never got around to making a thread for it. Anyway there a nber of ppl who believe the entire story of NGE was just crazy WTF bullshit others believe they wer just deep and hard to under stand (my opinion), anyway please share your thoughts (mind that they are intelligent)

First of all, NGE was a great anime until episode 17 (around there... it's been a while). Though the characters never really struck me as "lovable", it still had intrigue, a good plot, a refreshing style, meaning and a fairly good directing. It all went down hill afterwards. The directing especially as Anno never planned the ending of the show, and running out of funds was going batshit insane from the stress. Directing wasn't the only thing to suffer, as the story element took a hit in the end as well. There were maybe a few meanings but I believe some fans over think what the director was really trying to convey and in doing so, make it out to be the greatest series of all time.

For example, the last couple episodes when it was penciled in. I don't get it when fans say, "It has meaning," but in reality it was only penciled because they were running out of funds. This might be one of the reasons I dislike Eva as it is over hyped to the extent of being idolized for reasons unknown. There are also fans who have no understanding of the series and love it to death which irritates me... I know I shouldn't judge an anime based on other's judgment, but Eva was just too much.

In the end it comes down to how the series finished. The cinematography and other anime elements just didn't fit my tastes especially with how the ending seemed a little sporadic and unplanned. It also left the "feel" of the first half of the series which I liked so much. I can't deny that it holds meaning, but I do think fans over do it when it comes to this department as well.

So there you have it. My analysis on NGE. :)

I guess I'll be the first to say that I liked the anime as a whole. I honestly don't think there was even one thing I was not at least content with. I wish I had watched it more recently so I could offer better support to my arguement but everything was lovable; the style, the character development(though obviously there could've been more), the use of religious themes, etc...
And I'd like to address this point.

While I do agree that SOME people reach a little far in their interpretation of the series we must remember that NGE is a piece of art and as such means different things to different people. I've heard some very intelligent conversation about it, all of which makes sense but may not be what the director thought people would take away from it.

There's nothing wrong with that and in fact, I agree with your statement. But there are times when you know people are grasping at straws to make something more out of nothing.

this is my take on NEG and it goes a little something like this...

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the brain child of one Hideki Anno and the animation studio GAINAX and i have too say that this series 'is the best anime of all time' in my book but enough of that lets get to general discussion.

The thing that strikes me is how the 26 series episodes played out. it was not untill episode 20 that the whole story took a serious turn. As many of you know GAINAX was in a bit of finacial crisis by the time episode 23 was in production and had to use cuts and sound bites from previous episodes but that is what gave it all the hype to begin with by the time the series was over.

After the series was over it just left a big gapping hole of unanswered questions like was Rei really a clone of Shinji's mother? Did Asuka ever come out of her comatose state? What about SELEES plans of the Human Instrimantality Project? All of those gusetions were answered in the two movies Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion.

Death/Rebirth was a compression of episodes 1-24 which leads up to The End Of Eva that becomes a new ending for episodes 25 AIR and episode 26 My Purest Heart for You. What the Human Instrimantatlity project was all humanity would be come as one entity which ended up being a giant Rei looking entity but it was up too Shinji if mankind should live or become one entity. In the end he chooses that mankind should excist but it came with a heavy price.

Now 10 years later Eva has not showed any signs of slowing down, and with 4 movies with a new story and a completely new ending and characters in production and the 1st already complete and comming to America by the end of this year. I believe that these movies will forever change the world of Evanglelion.

Ironically, such an assumption has no factual basis, just like the "people grasping at straws". Odd how the human mind works sometimes.

I see NGE as a psychological study of humans; the Freud of the anime world so to speak. You see the reasons and the end to which the people play their roles. You see both their good and bad qualities, no one is up to the standards of a "hero" or other such idealized entity.

@Jcm srry I won't quote u cus I'm typing on my iphone and it will take too god dang long to do it. Anyway, what u said about End of Eva just so u know (and this is also a debated issue) the movie ending and the tv ending are two different things. The tv ending being Shinji accepting Human Intrumentation (that wrd gets my vote for most kickass wrd ever) while movie is him REJECTING human instrumentality. Oh yeah also I would like to ask ur thoughts on what u think the muted sentence in movie said and what u think about the final line in the movie (HEAVILY debated issue even to this day) means, there are even some that say that Asuka got morning sickness and is preggo anyway your thoughts?

PS: I actualy HATED the TV ending I had to watch each episode like 11times so I could understand wtf was going on. I swear those last two wer a doozy

As see both endings as one in the same. Episodes 25 and 26 aren't showing Shinji accepting Instrumentality, it's showing the process with which he decides that he'd rather live with people even though they can cause him pain, thus rejecting Instrumentality. The episodes demonstrate the internal forces on Shinji's decision while End of Evangelion shows the more external influences. As for Asuka's line, I think it has to do with her disgust of herself (and possibly the rest of humanity) because, like Shinji, she needed the desire to be an individual to escape the sea of LCL in physical form. Which probably means that she went through a similar process to Shinji, in that all her severe internal problems were laid bare.

I see what you mean. I do though believe that the tv and movie ending are different (it's ok u think differently bcus this is also an issue of dbate). I believe the the TV ending was tv acceptation of instrumentality. I used I believe they where the same ending until I studied the TV ending a little more closely I noticed that Shinji at least at the beginning of the TV endingnwas rejecting it but throughout these episodes Shinji changes his mind it even goes as far as to him say "I understand....I can live here! :D" then ppl randomly appear and start clapping and cheering (in an almost what seems drug indusced happiness). D other scenes show everyone fixing be massive psycological problems i.e. Asuka's mother "issues" (if u can call that crazy shit issues), Misato's umh father problems and her whore attitude toward Kanji, etc. Although I do agree with u on what the final line of the movie was and yet I feel like there is something missing something that goes deeper than that....meh. What are u thoughts on the muted sentence that Commander Hikari says to Whats-Her-Face (been a while since I watched series so I forgot) b4 he shot her.

Before i get in over my head on this I would like too point out that Commander Ikari (Gendo) was working with a Dr. Naoko Akagi (Ritsuko mother) and became romantically involved after the dissaperance of Yui Ikari (Gendo's wife). Watch episode 21 this will give more details about what happen.

In the End of Evangelion the sceane with Commander Ikari and Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, Ritsuko rigged the Magi to explode at her command but one of them refused it was Caspar which is the aspect of Naoko as a woman. She refused her own daughters request of self-suicide and let the man she once loved live. With that said Gendo points the gun to Ritsuko and said "Dr. Akagi the truth is..." no audio and Ritsuko replied "You liar." and a shot rings out with Ritsuko going backwards in the pool of LCL.

As for my take on this part it could be almost anything but Ritsuko, like her mother, fell in love with Gendo. He could have said 'i love you' or 'i loved your mother' but that is left for debate just thinking about it is giving me the run around so i'll leave it up to anyone else who has a second opininon.

When Shinji says "I can live here," most people(including me) thinks he is talking about the real world, instead of rejecting it and becoming one with everyone through the Human Instrumentality Project.

I think most people nowadays pretty much agree that he said "I loved you," though it's still up for debate. I wonder whether this will be addressed in Evangelion 2:0...

Now, my take on this series? Greatest anime ever. YOu have to rewatch it quite a few times to comprehend it fully, but talking to other Eva fanatics helps speed up the process. I've participated in way more good and meaningful discussions on Eva than on any other anime, and it is one of the few series I can still rewatch and enjoy just as much as the first time I watched it.

Srry but I have to derail my thread for just a moment and mention this...OMG U HAVE MY NAME SEPH O.O!!!!!!!! Lol

Anyway as 4 d muted line being "I love you" I highly doubt that because I read a few (hundred) files about NGE and one in particular that came out was d a conversation between the voice actress Ritsuko and Anno about the muted line and she said it it was something that was so genious and orignal (although the bitch refuses to tell anyone what the line is XO) that she almost cried. Also so u guys believe that they are the same ending? Well it's interesting to have different thoughts and not just all of us agreeing. Oh question is Eva 2.0 those 4 movies coming out with the retelling of Eva but just a bit different (I.E new characters & ending) or is it an entirely new series all together (in which case I would piss myself from excitement XD).

In The End of Evangelion, there's a point where Shinji says something like, "Everybody should just die." And a little later, he says, "It would be better if I never existed ... I should just die, too."

I first watched the movie six, seven, maybe eight years ago; a fansub I had bought at a local comic book store. When those lines came up, I had to pause the movie. Those lines fit exactly what I had felt before. Thinking that everybody else should die, that all other people deserved to die, and then believing that I was really the only one who should die. I'm not going to get into the psychology of it right now, but I believe that a lot of people experienced similar feelings as an adolescent, and that a lot of adolescents are experiencing similar feelings today.

One of the reasons I love NGE is because, like Catcher in the Rye, you can watch it and understand what the protagonist is going through. I say this in just about every NGE discussion I come across: People complain that Shinji is a pussy and a whiny bitch, but when I was fourteen, I was a pussy and a whiny bitch, too. When I was fourteen, all it took was my parents arguing and yelling at each other to make me curl into a ball and cry my eyes out. And that's okay. Fourteen-year-olds aren't known for their ability to be strong and handle stress well. Anime series often get us to suspend reality and believe that kids can do amazing shit and tackle the toughest problems without batting an eye, but that's about as far from reality as you can get.

Anyways, like Catcher in the Rye, NGE isn't for everyone. One person can watch it and draw all sorts of parallels to their life, while another person can gain nothing from the series. But the series should still be respected for, if nothing else, doing something different. I have still not seen a series as deep or that breaks as many rules as NGE.

I never really found the movies that great, they were ok but it wasn't really what I had expected. Then I find this Neon Genesis Evangelion - RETAKE doujin series and it turned out to be alot better than what happened in the movies lol.
