The lack of Noein hit me recently while updating the master list because I believe it to be more than noteworthy.
Not to spoil too much of the story (fairly complex and dynamic) let me just say that it tells about a inter-dimensional war that suddenly shifts to a new battlefield - present-day Earth. It is on this battlefield that we are introduced to the core of the main cast - a group of kids and a commando of visitors from one of the fighting dimensions, who (as we will learn in time) hide many shocking secrets about the kids and themselves.
Come to think of it - the word 'war' may be a bit misleading ...
While the series definitely doesn't lack battle sequences, it's also about emotions, bonds as well as overcoming one's weaknesses and prejudice. The fights themselves are also based on individual powers (the visitors are no pushovers, believe me) rather than about strategy and armies clashing with each other.
As the story progresses it delves more and more in to the realms of quantum physics (it is without any doubt a sci-fi series) and psychological depth behind the ideals of our heroes but it's never too hard to digest nor does it harm the rather quick pacing of the show.
What definitely shines in Noein is it's audio-visual makeup. I personally found the unique, slightly artistic animation style absolutely gorgeous and thought that it still looked impressive when I was recently re-watching the series.
The music is top-notch as well, combining symphonic elements with some more modern ones. More than once it made my hair stand up.
In my opinion Noein should appeal to those who liked Donnou Coil, Bokurano, Zegapain or Fantastic Children and may just prove the best one of the 5. It comes from the director of Escaflowne and Birdy the Mighty Decode and aired between 2005 and 2006 BTW ...
Here's the OP and some screencaps :

ps: Forgive an old man for pulling out yet another dusty title from his drawer
I've always wanted to do that!
(just this once) - cause I don't have enough words to describe how good this series was. Or should I say, I'd only end up making a novel if ever I do say something about it.
I really enjoyed the series. They showed it on scifi channel. It was a bit heavy on science but not so much to get confuse. Overall, great series and the voice acting was great especially the voice over of karasu the coolest character!
This is a fine series. It's nicely animated and intelligent without requiring as much effort to understand compared to something like Evangelion. I thought the dub was done pretty well.
