Problems plaguing otaku(s).

I thought I'd start off with an awesome song.
I felt this to be the appropriate place to post this topic opposed to Serious Discussion.
Observing over the months, I have noticed on more than one occasion, being a otaku, biased comments and bigotry towards particular anime series'. Series' being called overrated, etc.
Now these comments could very well influence one's opinion on that particular show after hearing such blasphemy and heresy, especially to a up-and-coming otaku. Awakening and nurturing my otakuness I have experienced that biased heresy with Code Geass, watching people comment on how awesome and hearing how cool it was. A mistake I do not plan to make again.
On that example, what gets me is people calling the show overrated and going on and on about it overrated when they themselves have not watched the show, or they might have one episode or two but not the whole series to get a feel for it and stick with their opinion of it.
Now, I have no idea of their personal feelings of it, being an observer of such things.
Maybe I'm overreacting to such matters, I don't know, but on that note discuss:

I'm not even sure what your point is, theotaku. I'm assuming that you trying to tell us to watch the shows ourselves before making a decision to watch/drop it, and not be swayed by the general public. In my opinion, while Code Geass might be overrated, I liked the series, no question about it. What I don't understand is why people like the Deathnote anime when it's no different from the manga, and the manga goes much more in depth and much more cunning in terms of psychological warfare and deducing skills, for example.
But there are cases where the public is true. Stereotypes exist solely because of the number of recurring cases that reinforce some view. Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece are the famous trio that I avoid like the plague, and with good reason because people back up why they like/hate those shows. I personally couldn't stand watching a series over 100 episodes unless it was Yu Yu Hakusho or DBZ. With the mainstream trio, there are fillers galore.

Well in general, I talk about all animes in a positive manner. Perhaps that's just how I am. I see the good in everything. Though, I do make sure to note things that people may not like as a sort of warning.
It's best just not to take Otakus hating on certain series too seriously. Or at least, I don't. I kind of had to since my favorite series is Dragonball Z and I've yet to meet an Otaku who didn't bash it at even the slightest mention of the series ;.;

I have been known to be an ass like that on occasion and berate an anime just because of how universally accepted it is among the anime market (i.e. Naruto, Bleach). I've never really given them a try though so I don't pretend that I really have an opinion on the matter.

Lol, I see you took it to heart when I said, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was overrated. But I have watched the WHOLE series and therefore can have an opinion on it. Sure, it's a fun anime to watch, but it's not as great as everyone hyped it to be, but yes, I agree with you that people who form an opinion before watching a show are premature...

Really, any series that is loved by a ton of people and gets an insane amount of attention is overrated, simply because it's not possible for an anime series to be perfect or without fault. That doesn't mean that the series is bad, not at all; it just does not deserve the amount of attention that it gets.
For example, Cowboy Bebop is overrated. It's a great show, it has great music and character, and all sorts of other shit. But it's not a life-changing experience that greatly affects every person who sees it. It's not some miracle series that reforms murderers and turns them into civil people that wouldn't hurt a fly.
Some overrated series are trash and don't deserve the attention they get, but some are good series that just get too much attention. It's up to each person to decide if a popular series fits into the first category or the second.

I have never let the opinions of others get in the way of my own enjoyment and perspective of a series (from what I can remember). Any possible way those opinions could influence me is counter-balanced by my skepticism. Also, it is important to note that while the opinion of one who has watched an entire series is valuable, the opinion of one who has watched an entire series and can display some intelligence is even more valuable. Even I have to admit that most of the Code Geass fandom consists of yaoi fangirls and morons.

Stating an opinion about something you lack knowledge about is silly but such notions usually stand out and can easily be ignored (or ridiculed). All other opinions (as long as they're personal) should be respected IMHO.
As for being swayed by outside pressure ... it might just have an opposite effect on me. When, after watching a show and developing my own views on it, I hear something that strongly contradicts them, I tend to get somewhat defensive and cling to my opinion all the stronger even though still open for properly backed arguments.
As for the titles mentioned ...
The shounen trio aside (there's an age in one's life when stuff like that has the right to fell awesome and some people just stop there for a considerably longer period of time), I'm willing to agree that Haruhi and Geass are overrated (mainly by underage fanbases more susceptible to advertising). Kinda sad too since (even though I've enjoyed both) the insane promotion scales like those two received make many other great (sometimes superior or at least competitive) titles evade the mass perception.
Not gonna say a fucking bad thing about Bebop since I'm an immortal fanboy on that particular matter.

Despite agreeing about CB being overrated, I do believe however that it was one of those series that most deserved it, considering its era. If anything, wouldn't K-ON! be the best example of what an overrated series really is. Seriously what does it even have to offer aside from “moe moe kyun~”? People here and there have already labeled it as the best show of the season, if not of the entire year, just because of the characters, and maybe, the music.
Another one would be TMHS; isn't it probably the most overrated anime of all time. After having seen the entire first season of Haruhi, did people have a sudden desire to become psychiatrists? Did they even show some interest in learning, by means of studying about all sorts of paranormal existences? I'd say that the majority only wanted merchandises and stuff, mostly hentai related ones.
CG - I recall having seen the first episode and that's the farthest I've gotten, despite all of the positive reviews that I’ve read all over the net. (What’s wrong with me?) But surely, you wouldn't hear me talking crap on how it didn’t appeal to me; marked by my unparalleled apathetic nature. I honestly don't know how it managed to amass such a huge following (if not for CLAMP being one of those reasons) but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Either way, I don't think I'm gonna bother with it for a long time.
PS: Not in my least intention was to imply that those series aren't worth the fuss, it's just that no matter how awesome they may be for some (if not for most), "awesome" doesn't really equate much to being flawless and not everyone shares the exact same opinion, who would simply agree. What's disturbing though is as Das have mentioned; other certified awesome/worthwhile series simply fading into the shadows of oblivion. (That's probably where the demographics come into play but whatever)

I don't usually give a damn about what other people thinks nor says about a certain series once I’ve already got my own opinion set in stone. Otherwise, I'm still open to authentic opinions and such.
In relation, fussing over unlikable series for me is rather pointless. What's the point, discouraging others not to watch them? Even how, let's say, bad a series really is, it still deserves to be seen, for others to be able to judge 'em for themselves. Besides, being familiar with a good amount of series, both of which that are good and bad, defines and separates a genuine anime fan from a fag.
One question though for you theotaku; in what way or how do you exactly see this issue as a plague for all of “otak(u)ind”? *mankind* Just how do you propose we’d solve the problem, if there actually is one? You created this topic so you might as well discuss back.
