So yeah - solid ending IMO albeit as unique and subtly paced as most of the series.

I'm finishing up Xam'd tonight and I'm seriously disappointed. I shouldn't be since I had waning interest in the series since episode 14 or so (when things actually finally started happening) and right now I'm going through the motions. I don't get why Bones has such serious problems with story telling. Ayakashi Ayashi and Eureka Seven both suffered from the exact same problems as Xam'd (and had almost identical plots now that I think about it) and they all also look absolutely amazing so I always get suckered in.

You're kinda right about the storytelling. Still I'd simply blame the fact that they squeezed the show into 26 eps while they easily had material for more. As a consequence - the explanation of many things suffered. I still hold Bones in very high regard though and believe that many answers are to be found if you re-watch the series - they're simply harder to spot.
Maybe it's simply their way to make the shows more 'challenging' and memorable or maybe they just didn't have the cash for a longer show - the last thing I'd want to see was Xam'd suffering visually from budget stretching.

I understand all the stuff that's going on but the revelations are so randomly staggered and scattered around that stuff you should care about doesn't matter and stuff that doesn't really matter sticks out. That's a better way to articulate my gripes, is that the pacing is awful. Code Geass and Gundam are both excellent examples of pacing done well and events scale up every few episodes. In Xam'd they go five episodes with nothing really important happening (Akiyuki wearing his mask seemed like such a waste of time) and then spring a dozen major revelations and do it by characters that aren't involved saying "Oh yeah, Ishu actually did this" and then it cuts off to Ishu and she's doing something unrelated to the huge revelation about her and then something else big and random happens.

I see your point and share it to some degree. Still - I'd blame the inappropriate series length for everything. Believe it or not but I actually loved many of those 'useless' episodes with nothing major happening and find them essential to creating the unique mood of the show.
I never wanted Xam'd to become a fast-paced, action-filled, easily digestible title and to my great joy - it never did. I think that if the series were a little bit longer, the more major events could have been properly prepared and executed making it even better. I loved it nonetheless though 8)

Yeah, I went in expecting something similar to Eureka Seven and that's mostly what I got from the series. Like you said, the series would've benefited from at least a few more episodes to better space the story. It sounds like I'm really hating on the show and Bones in general but I'm going through a lower phase of anime enjoyment right now so I'm kinda intolerant of flaws. Also, I watched about 6 episodes of Gundam 00 before getting around to finishing Xam'd and find the former to be much more palatable to my current tastes.
