What's with characters narrating to the audience?

[i am seeing it a lot and am bothered about it. tried to find a topic like this to say my opinion but can't find it so here it is.]
It's odd, you know? and what's the point of it? take pokemon for example: ash or whoever has their pokemon do some crazy move, then brock or someone else makes some long narration of how it all happened... really, did i ask for a narration?? also, there are a few shows that have the narrator seem like he's talking to himself. well...i would like to know how some think about this cause it really is a bother!

In the original pokemon series the episode "The Great Race!" when ponyta evolves into rapidash. Ash, and Ponytas Trainer are all like "Ponyta,has evolved...INTO RAPIDASH!" and you are watching it all happen.

It's best to get used to it, since it's done almost everywhere. Narrating is simply a way to get exposition out of the way in a very simplistic manner, most often used in Fighting anime. You could have a solid 10 minutes of fighting with no explanation, and then have one guy stand over his dead opponent for the last 20, or we can stretch that 10 minutes with narration. If every attack isn't explained in detail, how would they ever get to triple-digit episodes?
One of my favorite narrators is still Sagara Sannosuke from Rurouni Kenshin.
Sometimes it's hard to believe he isn't holding a microphone or advertising for some manly hair gel.

I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to, as I've never taken issue with narration, but I do have one idea...
A lot of anime in the past few years has come from Light Novels and Visual novels. In a primarily text based medium, there's generally a lot more self reflecting and personal analysis than you would see in a visual medium, such as Anime or Manga.

As everyone has said, its a way to let the audience know what is happening, its better to grab all of the audience including the kids together. That is based on the normal narration like Pokemon/Digimon/ shounen fighting animes.
I see you value good shows as the ones that are closed to reality, mature, and require thought, just like me, an example is like Kara no Kyoukai, a kid wouldnt get what is going on there.

In shows for kids I don't mind it because they need to explain it to children who don't understand things, and of course to fill time.
I will say I find it insulting when it's in anime not meant for kids. It is just insulting for them to explain everything in detail to the viewer when they should have figured it out by them self.
I'm really becoming irritated by it in Bleach and One Piece though I will stand it for now. The problem lies in the fact that the viewer is viewed as a retarded 2 year old with no deductive power at all. No one watching Bleach need's a 10 minute explanation on how the last 2 minute fight unfolded.
I don't mind small explanations, but the long drawn out one's that take the viewer as mentally deficient really bother me.

I can think of one series where it actually helped a lot - Death Note.
All this crazy shit would happen, and we wouldn't understand why it happened at all, because we were missing vital pieces of information, of course, so Light would explain everything. Very helpful.

I don't mind it being in an anime intended for little kids, but don't put it in an anime intended for older viewers!
Bleach tends to wear this trend out a lot! If you gave me info on Ichigo's attack once, i don't need to hear that same bit of info every time he uses it, i also don't need to hear someone explaining to me that Ichigo just got his ass kick when i could already see that myself!
Yet some anime makes good use of it, anime like: Death-note!
We the viewers never knew what was going on til after the situation had taken place, and still some info was left out! Hearing Light explain the rest, was helpful.
