It isn't an ending at all. Its kind of just a random selection from the manga they chose to animate, although they probably put more logic into it.
My theory, as well as other fans', is that they've been getting a lot of bullshit from fans, especially desperate
American asshole fans who can't stand living without Inuyasha after the manga ended. So they decided to animate some random material as a type of informal market test. The theory I've come to is that if they get a good enough reception from the public, not just through the "Its a Rumic World" exhibit, but through pirating and shit like that, it will probably influence them to push Takahashi-sensei to give them the green light to start producing OVAs to finish the series, since that's what Sunrise has wanted to do since the series ended.
