Some time ago, I started keeping track of chapter count and page numbers in all of our four magazines with the intention of finding out some averages. With the latest
Shitsurakuten, we now have a full year's worth of releases from that magazine, so now felt like an appropriate time to share my findings from this data.
The following is the average chapter and page count for each magazine. This includes all 2016 releases of Kairakuten and X-Eros, and the latest 12 issues of Shitsurakuten and the latest 4 issues of Kairakuten BEAST—which is all the issues since we started translating these two magazines. Spreads and illustrations are not counted as chapters, with the exception of the typical 3-page color short at the start of Shitsurakuten. The final page of the last full chapter is listed as the page count, and when an extra chapter is present later in the magazine, after ads/illustrations, that page count has been added to the total. This means the page count isn't perfect (includes some ads and excludes some illustrations), but it's a good enough average. You could deduct 10-15 pages worth of ads if you really want to.
There were a lot of outliers in X-Eros during 2016, so I made some notes for those at the bottom of the post.
Kairakuten 2016-01 - 2016-12
X-Eros #37 - #48 (2016)
Shitsurakuten 2016-04 - 2017-03
Kairakuten BEAST 2016-12 - 2017-03
X-Eros notes:
1. Averages including ever issue.
2. #39 is a huge outlier at 100+ pages below the average. These are averages excluding this month.
3. #40 is similarly an outlier, but less severe. These are the averages excluding both months.
4. #37, despite being an extra large issue, had little impact on the three average (~3 pages).
Staying true to the theme of averages, the median of Average 2 (24 chapters, 535 pages) is probably the most representative value for the year.
Finally, to simply sum up all the averages for a monthly average, we get
81.7 chapters and
1577 pages (using Avg 2 for X-Eros).
