I think I've always heard it's just basically somewhat of a culture thing. Not that this is more rampant in Japan or anything, but rape is just a bigger theme in their pornography.

People like to see things they do not normally see. It's not acceptable in the real world but if given the opportunity and no one will know, I'm sure 80% of the human population is okay with rape.
Also the term rape has a negative connotation. And only despised upon by today's society standards.
But it works both ways and is okay in all animal species, except the human species. We're weird, we want to cover our desires, but it is most certainly there whether you want it to or not.
Look at it in your own life. Go outside, people stare at other beauty. Sometimes there's lust. People control that lust in public, because of the societal constucts and marriage and how it's wrong to love more than one person.

Eh, I don't see there being any more or less in relation to the amount of vanilla vs NTR, but I just read whatever. Sometimes NTR works stick out more when I look through genre's, but idk just another fetish/fantasy.

Why it's popular? Maybe because Japan is a male-dominant society with women gaining more power and rights. So there might be a power issue there. Just a theory.

Problem with part that theory is that there has always bee a fair amount of "forced/rape" erotica within society, far before the turn of the century, so your theory doesn't hold validity.
The rest I agree with though; it's a fantasy that can develop a strong sense of emotional arousal for men and women. Men feel dominate and power over their partner who feels submissive towards this situation to which the sub can't help but give into pleasure. This doesn't mean that this is how it actually works in the world, but it's none the less a fantasy/idea. I look at it as another plot to a new movie or something along that lines.

It's most likely the taboo of it. We all know rape is wrong, but somehow that just makes it naughtier. Just like how incest hentai is very popular despite how wrong incest is.
