I've still not watched it.

I've always felt like it was overrated and commercialized to hell and back, which makes it even harder to take seriously.

What killed it for me is Shinji, I never had to watch the series to know he was a whiney piece of shit. Same reason I couldn't get into Himouto Umaru-chan, though she is also a manipulative bitch as well.

Him being a whiny and gloomy is a pretty central point to the story, it's not out of place. Things wouldn't be as "significant" if he was a straightforward hotheaded mecha protagonist.

Also, don't care about how you feel towards anything.

I agree with you though, if Shinji weren't such a bitch the story wouldn't have been nearly as good as it was. For the most part, I feel like he's one of the very few young mecha protagonists that seems realistically human and reacts appropriately to the events around him for someone his age, who grew up being neglected.
