And this is where our opinions diverge. Given that prohibition was basically the linchpin in the golden age of organized crime I'd say it did far more harm than any good it could have possibly done. Lucky Luciano and Al Capone would still have been shooting people up and selling heroin but I doubt they'd have become as filthy rich as they did.
I'm not disagreeing with you on that note. I just don't judge their efforts as harshly. They were a relatively small grassroots group with legitimate social concerns. Their method for fixing it was radical and, as history shows, a complete failure, but I'm not going to condemn them for trying to do good when it was far easier to do nothing.
