Likewise. I don't watch much anime these days, mostly because typical tropes tend to deter my interest. Though, two in particular that I can always go back to and enjoy are DBZ (granted, anything after the Frieza saga is unwatchable, in my opinion) and Cowboy Bebop.
I can see what you mean. I feel much the same way about games. I like it when they do something new and interesting, or just play with a trope in a clever way. Perhaps the only reason I'm not so selective of anime is that I haven't seen a lot of anime, so everything is new and interesting to me. I have seen Bebop, but honestly I didn't like it that much. The plot didn't feel focused enough for me. I get that the focus was on character development, but I wasn't even very impressed with that, either. Maybe it's one of those things where if I experience it a second time my opinion will change completely.
Uh, it depends on the site, really. I've had both strict and lenient editors whose demands ranged from expecting news posts every day to supplying staff members with free copies of games within genres that piqued our interest. Personally, I'm more of an opinion piece kind of guy, as reviews typically require scores be attached to them and a 7/10 can mean different things for different people. If I can avoid what I feel is unnecessary hassle and derision, I do. But at the end of the day, the editors make the rules.
Huh, that's interesting. I guess being freelance has its ups and downs. I feel the same way about reviews. I'd like to do some form of video game critique in the future, and I've never liked the idea of scoring my reviews. I would rather just talk about what was done well and what needs to be improved, and let that speak for itself.
As far as an example, here's an older post that I still feel very strongly about: http://gamersyndrome.com/2014/video-games/the-last-of-us-the-walking-dead-why-zombies-hinder-creativity-in-the-video-game-industry/
That was a good read. I have noticed a rise in zombie-based games the past few years. Some games even get bizarre zombie spin-offs that seem totally out of place, like Red Dead Redemption. There's one thing I disagree with in regards to the article though: The Last of Us wasn't about the zombies. The epidemic was simply justification for the real purpose of the game--to show humanity at its lowest. I think you spend more time in the game fighting hunters than infected, and it's worth noting that the entire multiplayer component has no zombies whatsoever. It's just the Fireflies versus the hunters. Humans brutally killing humans. I haven't played The Walking Dead, so I can't comment on that.
A condensed answer: Portal 2, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Hotline Miami, the Civilization series, etc.
A more extended answer in the form of another condensed answer: Check the link in my sig titled 'Player.me', it's a site that lets you list out what games you enjoy, etc. 'S more or less another form of social media, but I just use it to catalog what games I enjoy.
You have varied tastes. A lot of retro games. Lots of Nintendo. Shooters, platformers, RPGs, stealth games, indie titles... I saw a lot of my favorite games in there. I'm shocked by the lack of Metroid Prime in there though. You had Super Metroid in there, I believe. Don't tell me you haven't played it...
