The actual series is far more depressing than comedic though. It showcases otaku lifestyle and hikikomori living, and when you strip it down to the bare bones, the hardcore aspects of it aren't nice at all. For anime, I'd say give Eureka seveN and Neon Genesis Evangelion a go.
