okay, ATi has launched 5970, but Nvidia chooses to postpone Fermi's launching to april.

guess what combination will be the best in gaming performance :

Phenom II X4 9xx Black Edition + ATi-Radeon 5970

or

Intel Core 2 Extreme + coming soon Nvidia Fermi

Well if you want to use the PC to the max, Compatible hardware is highly recomended.

rokushou, are you sure the Core 2 Extreme and Phenom II X4 are an even comparison of processors? Also, I do believe your questions will be answered once the new nVidia card is released and someone runs benchmarks on it.

Just so you know OP Core 2 Extreme is old tech now.

You'd be benching with an i5 or an i7.

I'm currently using a NVIDIA 8800GTS / AMD Athlon II 295 combo but if I had to upgrade the video card (8800 still runs all games fine for me) I'd probably switch to ATI due to their prices being much lower over here.

I say wait for the Nvidia card and let someone test the cards on the games you play since when I upgraded to a radion 4350 form my Nvidia 8400 and I had problems with my games if I ran it on direct x10 (or maybe its because its a direct x10.1 but since that it work, Right?)

Agreed, Intel performs well with BOTH ATI and Nvidia. BOTH SLI and Crossfire are capable on their X58 motherboards, and BOTH ATI and Nvidia are supported equally on intel systems (in fact, it's AMD that has a lack of a support for SLI). Just because AMD loves to provide some extra overclocking programs, and some extra hardware support (AMD chipset can provide hybrid graphics and maybe improved crossfire) doesn't really mean that the performance from ATI/Intel to ATI/AMD is that significant.

Right now, any Intel i7 paired with a 5970 will beat any Phenom 965 with a 5970 any day. Just by pairing an ATI card with an AMD processor doesn't mean you will see any significant increase over using an Intel processor & and ATI card.

Intel/Nvidia will be probably victorious in the end in terms of gaming performance, because Nvidia has had all this extra time to perfect the GF100, and the i7 is still on the bleeding edge (with the only triple channel controller on the market too).

However right now, the best combo is Intel/ATI :P

EDIT: However, I cannot say that AMD is on the 'low end'. They are still competing very well with Intel, and their Phenom II 965 is one of the best quad cores on the market.

No I have a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 and a ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series I had a Nvidia card that worked great with every game I played on all low settings with mt ATI I can run it a decent setting at around 40-60 fps[/b]

I'm rocking an Intel-ATI box been running sweet since day one.

From what I've read and seen AMD is currently targeting the mid and lower end of the market so you do get more bang for your buck if you buy AMD.
Intel has a broader coverage in terms of products and now that the 775 chips are dirt cheap it's easy to build a powerful system with very little budget.

In the graphics world though the lines are a bit blurred with both ATI/AMD and Nvidia clashing to gain market dominance in all sectors of their respective markets.
But if some of you realise it ATI offer really good bang for buck though Nvidia isn't far behind.

The whole manufacturer fanaticism is just childish claiming that one brand is better than the other without actually offering some sort of proof.

Having come from both camps I can say that all four companies offer great products and usually it comes down to how much someone is willing to spend on his/her system that dictates what hardware they end up with.
