I apologize if I sound rude, but you should just dump WMP. Well, not literally, but I'd highly recommend d/l-ing a new player. Get the CCCP pack. It comes with two players, so just use one of them.
If you really want to stick to WMP, then you probably need to install the right codecs. I don't think avi is playable with the default WMP. No, I don't know which codecs you need nor where to get them. Yes, I do think you should just get the CCCP pack and forget WMP.

I use windows media player 11 and I love it.
I watch a hell of a lot of anime on it just fine. Just download k-lite mega codec pack and choose playback codecs only and set file associations for windows media player and you should be fine. For some reason wmp11 plays videos a lot smoother and it sounds a lot nicer than vlc/media player classic on my machine. Also, I use wmp11 to keep a very nice-looking library of all my music on it. Very rarely do I come across a file that for some reason won't load on it so then I use vlc/mpc and it will usually play on those. I haven't tried CCCP but I'm sure the playback codecs are probably the same and will work just fine.

Your problem most likely lies in Codecs. A Codec is a piece of software that allows your media players and audio/video programs to use certain formats. Every single format that exists requires a certain Codec for programs to communicate with it. An amigo somewhere above me mentioned a good Codec pack, and you could also try the K-Lite Codec pack as well. As for using Media Player 9, you really should try newer ones but you do not have to. The newer ones have more Codecs already loaded [so you don't have to spend time getting them yourself] but nonetheless MP9 can play anything that MP11 can, provided you get the right Codecs. And finally, I really recommend VLC Media Player, which plays almost anything right out of the box. Different versions have been made for Windows, MacOS and Linux Operating Systems it doesn't use very much system resources [RAM, CPU usage, etc] Well, I hope that Solves your problems amigo.
