Quite old indeed. This always amuses me though.

Spelling still is important. You need to make sure that all the letters originally in the word are still there, and that they're organized in a way that's not too arbitrary and/or forms another word.

I've always thought it was strange being able to read stuff like this. But I find it even more strange that I can read things like that easier than things like "wut, 2, neway, sumone, etc."

As long as you're familiar with the starting and ending alphabet of the word its pretty simple to read. Its something relating to how our eyes recognize items or things. One good example is the tendency to see faces on things like smoke, rock etc...
