I got a question for all you tech-heads. For some reason, my CPU(s) are always getting eaten up by something. I'm not exactly sure what it is. But at least one of my CPUs are at 50%+. Does anyone know whats going on? Even when I'm not using any programs or anything, it stays like that.

Yeah. I'm not sure if its completely the problem though. Cause last night, my CPUs were only running about 5% when I wasn't using it. Seems kind of strange.

Just look at what processes uses the CPU.
I assume you see your CPU usage in the task manager, and the task manager also allows you to view how much CPU the individual processes uses. That way you know why your PC is idling at 50%.
One process which often use the cpu allot is the indexing service which enables you to search your files faster, and since vista/win7 claims to be "better" at this, then this service must also run longer or more often.

Are you reading your cpu usage correctly? I am using vista and using only 3% of my cpu. When I run other operations in the background I use close to 50%.

Another common CPU/IO hog is the Superfetch service, more so on Vista than on 7. What Superfetch does is caches applications that you use more often so the load faster when you open them. It can be disabled in Computer Managment under the Services menu and it will show up in the Task Manager as "svchost.exe."

If no programs are actively running, check your icon tray, and close all background programs. Then check in task manager for a few seconds to see if it his 0. If it doesn't reach as low as 5%, then something appears to be hogging your CPU usage. Also remember that programs like firefox, word, adobe acrobat, etc. can take a lot of system resources without any reason.
Generally just looking at processes under task manager can pinpoint CPU hogs, but not always. Had one case where my CPU usage would never hit 0, even when all secondary programs were cut down. Even only running 17 processes, the computer still wouldn't hit zero, and it was in fact some system vital process like svchost.exe that happened to be hogging system resources.
After a thorough virus and adware scan, the problem was fixed. I recommend you do the same, clean your computer of excess junk. Also go into msconfig (just type in msconfig on the search space in the start menu) and cut down some non-vital startup processes and services. Rule of thumb, if you don't know whether it's an important startup process or service, it is better to leave it alone.

Tbh if you have the resources Superfetch is great really speeds up the programs you tend to use.
Though the Windows 7 implementation is much better than Vistas.
