My take on it is that the OP is trying to find a program that combines all these features into one. Although I don't use it anymore, I know for sure the latest version of Windows Media Player does all of this.
As far as I know, there's no good do-it-all solution out there. WMP can see files, but sorting options are limited and not very organized in addition to format support issues, can't deal with zip/rar, etc. It works if you don't mind these drawbacks though.
I think sticking things into categorized folder trees work best, and have files open with certain applications. Finding files is a breeze if you've got a tree setup. I really don't think there's an all-in-one program out there that can outdo programs with specific purposes.

I trust you can handle the facepalming yourself.
I do retain my facepalming at others. Read Nachbar's post if you are not sure why.
I didn't state it earlier, but I just don't think there's a program that functions as well as programs that do it all. Like I said earlier, Explorer (it is software after all) for organization and just opening files works best imo.

The following are what you seek:
1. Canto/Cumulus, the very mother of DAM.
2. ResourceSpace (free) might also be able to play in a native window without calling an external player, you'll need to check for yourself.
I'm not sure about Cumulus, but ResourceSpace seem useful. How do you use it?
