External Hardrive Help.

Does anyone know a good, cheap external hardrive? I'm not to worried about space on the hardrive, as long as it has 200+ Gigs on it. I've never needed an external hardrive until now, so I don't really now whats good and what isn't which is why I'm asking for help. Any help would be appreciated.

Well you can buy a regular hard drive then buy an external enclosure as well for it. Just gives you more options. Sometimes the encloser+hard drive is cheaper than an external. Then again, sometimes not. Also, the more cache the hard drive has the better. As for the outputs: As long as your computer has the necessary plug in. You should at least make sure whatever you buy will have a USB port because every computer has one. If your computer supports it, try to make use of Firewire or eSATA as its faster.

I would suggest getting one that has it's own power source, so you don't have to plug it in every time you want to transfer something. If you're using this to store important work, I would suggest getting two. One to use often and one for cold storage.

I have 2 external hard drives, both are Western Digital. But I have recently stopped using them in favor of interior hard drives (they are just so inexpensive now).

@Jacob: Is their anything besides price that makes you prefer internal hardrives?

Not really, they are faster since they run through SATA as opposed to USB that externals usually have. But like I said I have a few externals and they are awesome.

Sadly, most models that offer eSATA connection are premium models with prices through teh roof. Personally, I'd go with something like this one if you want to get the most bang for your buck; at $85 for 500 gigs and from a reputable seller and brand name you can't get much better. [/font]

i gotta mybook 500GB and i couldn't be happier. unless it was nigger. needs moar space. buying a mybook 1TB soon.

I can vouch for the Mybook 1TB hard drive. That thing is awesome.

Only downside is that it needs its own power source, but it'll shut down automatically if it's disconnected from the computer, or the computer shuts down.

Well USB and Firewire can power the drive - eSATA needs a power source. But if your external has a fan inside of it or anything extra its gonna need a power source anyways.

I second that, I own a Mybook 1TB hard drive as well. Works very nicely.

WD's hard drive's are a sound product ... I own 3 in total from WD, so far so good.
