I don't think meals are appropriate for first dates. In my mind, a good first date is meeting for coffee or at the park or something. You're not really aiming to impress like that, because most women will see through it anyway. First dates are just to get to know one another, not for dining.
Well, it all really depends on who you're going out with. If its someone you haven't known for a while, yeah its good to have some kind of calm atmosphere, whether you're taking her out anywhere or if you're just chilling. Regardless of whether food is a factor, you've gotta make sure the atmosphere and, well just about everything, allows you both to relax, be yourself, and allow you to focus on each other. If you're eating, as long as you're paying attention to what she has to say and appreciate her, it shouldn't matter what you're eating.
