Looks like everyone is right, you simply can't put a graphics card in a Macbook, and here is some reasoning why:

just wondering whether the latest Penryn MBP could have it's GPU upgraded - to something like an 8800MGTX maybe?

No. They are not cards: the chips is surface mounted to the logic board. The only way to upgrade is to buy a new laptop.
In that case, you probably have a regular MacBook, where it doesn't have a 9400m, and it is impossible to even try to put it in there.
