H.P. Lovecraft

This is the place to discuss all things H.P. Lovecraft, from his stories and books to movies based off of his works (or inspired by it) to comics based off of his stories or inspired by them.

I have a collection of some of his stuff, called Waking Up Screaming, and I started reading Herbert West: Reanimator last night. I saw the movie years ago and really enjoyed it. The short story is very easy to read so far, and the first part of it has already managed to send chills up my spine.

Any other Lovecraft fans?

Not only does he have one fucked up imagination for coming up with Cthulu, most of his stories are brick-shittingly awesome. :lol:

Lovecraft's works are classics of science fiction, and not droning or boring like L. Ron Hubbard's. Good stuff, man.

Has anybody seen any of the movies based on/inspired by Lovecraft's stuff or read any of the comics or played any of the games?

A while back, I saw a movie called Necronomicon (I think) that was several stories with an overarching story of a man, meant to be Lovecraft, reading the cursed book. The movie had three stories, each one based off of a certain Lovecraft story. All of them had some big differences from the original stories, but the movie was very enjoyable.

I'm a big fan of Lovecraft. It takes a certain kind of flair to present a story involving aliens and lost technology as a story about demons and magic.

Wait...Err, I meant, do it well.

There's a fan Lovecraftian MMO called Cthulu Returns, which does not suck overmuch.

Alright, so even though I know about Lovecraft and Cthulu, I am admitting that I have yet to actually read something he has written. I know, I fail.

Since you guys seem knowledgeable, is there any suggestions of what book/s I should start off with? Or which short stories/collection of short stories would get me started?

I'm not sure about short story collections, but I do know you can find everything he wrote online. It's actually free, I believe. Public domain or something. But if you want it in book form (easier to read that way, personally), there are a lot of collections of his stuff. I have a book called Waking Up Screaming that has a good few of his short stories, and a novella called "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" (which I've seen for sale as its own book).

I would search a library or book store and see what's available. I wouldn't shell out any cash unless the book was pretty thick, because chances are, the stuff that's in a small book is also in a big book, and you could get either one for roughly the same price.

Alright thanks, I'll probably start within a couple of weeks and see how it goes from there. Good to know I won't need to spend much or any money.

uh guys, i remembered something.... there was a small game called FIEND that led me to fiend.cjb.net (dunno if it still works) that used a reference of the cthulu, necromancy...

How to pronounce?

"There is no formal way to say this phrase, Lovecraft left it up to interpretation. A common (phonetic) way to say is:
