1. what are you trying to change in society, and why?
I am trying to change the way that people perceive my city (Tacoma, WA). Even some of the residents see it as "Seattle's Little Brother", and It's pissing me off. Even without venues, shops, and fluff, Tacoma breathes art. We patented a hybrid between blue collar life and creative fulfilment, and I want to help nurse this development. Sanity and responsibility sets us apart, and we just need some light to show the world with.
2.how did you get into this idea/situation? what prompted you to try and make these changes?
I was sitting in Wright Park, listening to some jackoff talk about his new place (in Seattle), and how his band is going to "make it big".
Dumbshit hadn't eaten in the last week and half, I found out that he was paying an extra $200 rent, just to be "where the action is".
3.up to this point in time, what have you done to make the changes?
I have been studying business and real estate, to forward my idea (I would like to buy up one of the empty buildings downtown, and fill it with businesses. The commerce (supported 120% from the profits, as I will use wages from my firefighting job to keep myself alive) will bring new residents, to take advantage of the cheap rent (slashed by me) and vibrant art scene. (I have plans for a gallery, an all ages venue, and a pub with a stage in the back)
In a more tangible sense, I have been volunteering with the Grand Cinema. Yearly, they take part in an independent film festival which dwarfs the others in this state. I have also been working with the local farmers market, to support local business--hoping somebody returns the favour.
4.What have been some obstacles in trying to make the changes? has it been difficult?
Money is always an obstacle. The current mindset in several areas (most people don't know this city's independently owned movie theatres exist). And.....drive. Even the adamant think that the city will change itself.
5.what have you accomplished up to this point ?
The independent film festival is taking off.
6.how will these changes affect you personally?
I haven't considered this yet. Probably not money (since the profits will be used to keep everything afloat).
.....I guess I just want to accomplish something?
7.Who has helped you along the way? is this a group effort?
I've been helping people.
On my personal idea (building thing), my family has been as supportive as possible, and my teachers are beginning to get excited--They are even looking up the codes, laws, and regulations that pertain to my grand scheme.
8.do you feel as if you are making an impact in the community?
Not yet...
9.have any controversies arisen because of the steps you have taken? are people resenting the changes you are making?
No changes have been made.
10.when you accomplish your goal will you try to change any thing else?
We're going to see what things look like when the time comes.
This is probably the exact opposite of what you're looking for, but I'm not envisioning a lot of shakers and movers lurking this site.
