Mufty pretty much nailed it. If you're serious about art, starting off drawing anime is a big no-no. Drawing from life and studying anatomy will help you improve much faster, and once you understand the basics, you can choose to draw in whatever style you like.
Drawing from life
will improve your overall drawing skill, giving you a grasp of anatomy, proportions, and gesture. Drawing only anime will
not help with much.
I don't think it matters if people begin drawing based on anime characters. Eventually we will have to go check human anatomy stuff to get a better grasp of details and proportions (muscles, etc). And anime anatomy isn't that incorrect (depends on the anime though).
I started with anime as reference and as I evolved, I began to check more into real life anatomy. Eventually, the real life anatomy helps you with your anime anatomy. Also, it's much more motivating to draw something that appeals you rather than something that does not.
