i guess an unlikely influence is an influence none the less, i didnt think 4chan was THAT popular though. lol i still dont know how it could have happened, has it really 'influenced' that much? what has it influenced, the internet community? rubbish, i say.
The only thing 4chan is responsible for is those silly internet memes.
And even most of those are ripped off from 2ch lol.
While 4chan does only come up with stupid memes (and most of those are unoriginal), the site has still had a big effect. lolcats became popular because it was a site with Caturday pictures that were first posted on 4chan, and now, pictures of cats with improper grammar are all over the place. It's gone far beyond the internet.
Also, Chocolate Rain became popular a few years ago mostly because of 4chan, and Tay Zonday appeared on TV a couple of times. Not to mention that just about everyone knew who he was for a while.
It's just internet shit, but internet shit is a big thing nowadays. Something starts on 2chan, a guy from 4chan sees it and copies it, then another guy sees it and copies it on Newgrounds, and in no time, they're referencing the meme on The Daily Show or The Soup or Attack of the Show, and it's out there.
I'm not saying 4chan is perfect or good (though the boards besides /b/ can be great), but the site does deserve some recognition. Not Most Influential Shit of the Year, but something.
