Need some help using bittorrent.

i know that all of you probably think im incredibly stupid for
asking this, but i've never used bittorrent before. I'm starting
to download things from it now however. Only its making it
difficult for me because its downloading at a very slow rate [45
kb/s atm] is there anyway i could speed this up?

Depends on what you're downloading a lot of the time. I download a new episode of bleach in about 15 minutes because there are about 15 thousand seeds for it and I get a rate of about 450 kb/s. Then there are times when it takes days for something to download because its either a very big file (like a 26 episode show) or it has less than 50 seeds (or both).
What torrent client are you using though? Azureus has a whole help thing devoted to fixing problems with speed. If there aren't many seeds then you're kinda hosed but if its something to do with the port you're using then it can help you out.

eh apparently i was trying to download something without many seeds -.- i read up a little about it last night. though how do i seed something after im done downloading it?

As long as you don't delete the file from the torrent list then it seeds by itself. Bittorrent is pretty self sufficient as long as you leave it running and don't mess with the files after downloading them (by messing around I mean deleting or renaming them and stuff).

eh, im using bitcomet, ive tried to use torrent stuff before but i was too lazy to deal with it all, so this is my second time around... lets see if i've improved at all =]

IMO uTorrent is nice if you want a nice, simple client.
Azureus is always good if you need options.

Azureus and uTorrent are probably two of the best. They can both run in the background without lagging your computer and you can view single files from a torrent that isn't fully done. Thats why bit torrent sucks ass. If you want to watch one episode of a 72 episode long show (lets say Monster) you have to wait till all 72 episodes are done before you can access even episode one. So if you don't like it, fuck you you've wasted your time and need to seed it for a week to salvage your share ratio.

I use Azureus and I love it. I have never ran into the problem with not being able to view a specific file inside a torrent if it is done and the rest are not. Most of the time when I start a 22 episode torrent I make the priority on the first few episodes very high, and they usually finish later that day while the rest of the episodes take longer.

I use mutorrent [?torrent] (its not u, its mu.. or if anything upside down h, a greek symbol... dunno why people use u)
Its served me quite well
The only thing with torrent clients is that you need to watch the upload rate after you dl because if you let it go un capped itll suck all your bandwith out 0.o

BitComet all the way! Well, its the only one I've used so far and it downloads with screwing up the computer, therefore its good.
