Hello,
It's been a while. I was thinking about this question recently and I thought it would be fun/interesting to hear who others believe are overrated, underrated and properly rated artists on this site. Please note that these opinions are subjective and this whole thread is meant to be fun (ie, try not to come at each other with gelding knifes). I'll start off:
Overrated: NaPaTa
Can you see why I mentioned not to come at each other with gelding knifes? Yes, I said it: I believe NaPaTa is overrated. To me NaPaTa is that very pretty, demure girl at school that enchants you with her looks, is graceful in everything she does, and whose presence warms your heart but in reality has no substance or personality behind her. That analogy describes NaPaTa's work in the last few years. Look, I can't deny that the art is gorgeous and the vanilla makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside but the story and characters are just bland and generic. The peaks and valleys in the plot, the character personalities/development, and the build up of sexual tension are always at a minimum with NaPaTa. Plus it doesn't help that almost every release is vanilla. NaPaTa is the apex of the artist who almost soley relies incredible art and on the fuzziness of vanilla to make it (because oh my god does that shit sell). Now, before you try to castrate me, ask yourself this: if NaPaTa's art was just average, would you still enjoy the releases?
Underrated: Hamao
It's weird to say that Hamao is underrated even though that Hamao's one of the most popular Wani artists for a long time. But I always get the sense that Hamao should be way more popular. Hamao is ridiculously talented: fantastic artwork (a step below NaPaTa but still better than 95% of the industry), and a willingness to tackle a wide range of genres and body types. Perhaps I feel Hamao's underrated because Hamao has had some duds (who wouldn't if you are willing to take the risks Hamao does) or that the comments in Hamao's releases aren't as gushing as NaPaTa's, but I just can't shake this feeling that Hamao is somehow flying under the radar despite all the success he/she's had. Let me know what you think.
Properly Rated: Key
I think it's safe to say that most folks on this site believe that Key is one of the best, if not the best, hentai artists ever. And Key being in the G.O.A.T conversation is a proper rating in my book. The reasons why are abundently clear: some of the best art ever, willing and able to tackle different themes/genres/body types , great character personality/development, engaging plots, accumluating sexual tension between characters, the list goes on and on. Esuke is my favorite artist, but I cannot deny that the body of Key's work far exceeds anything that Esuke, or anyone else for that matter, can produce.
