This past Sunday I went a returned an old faulty external hard drive and purchased a new one(yeah, yeah, I know it's not exactly the kind of thing one would expect to be doing on Valentine's day, and it sure as hell ain't sexy). It is now Monday night and the drive is already failing and giving me the "click of death". This is a public service announcement for anyone currently in the market for external hard drives or anyone who may be in the market for one in the future: do not buy one of these pieces of shit. After spending an entire day working to move files over from my primary external drive to this one, I now have to format the entire thing to wipe it clean and take it back to Best Buy. Waste of perfectly good day's worth of work and electricity if you ask me. Has anybody else had something like this happen to them?

Hard drives are mechanical devices you have to expect them to fail at some point you where probably unlucky that you ended up with a dud.

I've used tons of Seagate hard drives in my time and haven't had one fail on me.

It's the same story with WD I had to at one point had to upgrade a client's machine with a new hard drive and that failed the first go.

My WD external is a bit fucked up; if being plugged in for more than an hour and not actively used all the time, all the files gets corrupted for some reason. Always have to remember to plug it out the moment I stop using it, or 250 gb anime, vn, movies etc. goes down the drain and I have to format it.

=/ So yea, I'm not too fond of Western Digital right now.

I had a Western Digital and a Maxtor die on me. Wd 500 gig and Maxtor 750 gig.

I backed up 350 of the WD but only 200 of the Maxtor.

Mmkay, everything seems to have finished and the metaphorical dust has settled on this little incident of mine. I took back the defunct Seagate and Best Buy took it and gave me my refund no questions asked. The only problem was that they apparently had a big-ass sale on presidents day and were practically giving the damn external hard drives away, so there weren't hardly and moar drives left when I got there! All they had left were the fucking way uber expensive high-end drives for $200+ dollarz, which I couldn't afford. I was just about ready to walk out and come back in a week after they got a new stock shipment in when I spotted a 1.5tb drive waaaaay in the bottom corner of the display racks, the last one left in stock. It was also exactly the same price as the previous drive had been (after a fry's electronics price-match =P) So I didn't have to shell out anything extra. I ended up getting one of these which I hope works and doesn't blow up in my face in a few months. I'm actually a bit uneasy to be entirely honest; this is the first time I'm using a drive other than a Hitachi Simpletech brand, not including the Seagate that just blew up in a day.

....now I'm suddenly scared... I hope my current external HD doesn't die on me till I get a new one... then again, my HD isn't even half a year old yet... It's Maxtor BTW.

Maxtor is a Seagate company.
After Seagate bought out Maxtor they seemed to have inherited some of the bad luck that befell Maxtor.
Though I've had an old Seagate running for close to 5 years now and still going strong.

I recommend you guys the Iomega External HD's. Never had any problem with it.

It's tech man, it will fail at times.

As for me and my army of portable HDs, none have failed me yet (even the ones that have fallen off my desk multiple times).
