What is art?

I was wondering if i could have some of your opinions on 'art' what do you think art is? My personal feelings towards art is that anything can be art if the creator so desires, but that brings me to a new problem, is someones life a piece of art? Even if the creator of someones life (a parent) does not desire there child's life to be art, the child has ultimate control of there life and even has the ability to consider it art, so if a life wants to be considered art, even if the creator did not create it for this purpose should it be considered art? I would to hear some of your opinions.

I think that something can be called art if it properly conveys the intent of its creator. If I make a painting and it is supposed to be sad and then everyone thinks that it is funny then clearly I failed at conveying my message. So I think that anything can be art or anything can be an art form it just depends on how good you are at what you do.

So you mean it depends on how the audience see's it? Well what if i were to say that your very view of art is a piece of art...I'm allowed to say it as i am part of the audience...but the piece of art does not convey any emotions...maybe confusion but that brings me to the conclusion art is what the audience see's art as, you see if there was no audience then there is no art...hmm.

The laziest answer I can think of is that anything can be art. Just look at nature and tell me that it isn't beautiful.
Pretty much anything someone makes and says "this is art" is art. It doesn't have to be fancy or anything, just based on some kind of artistic principle.
I get the feeling that you're asking something closer to "What is the spirit of art?" or "What is the point of art?" and I feel that it exists to convey another persons view of reality. Most people take the word art and construe it as something that looks really cool or realistic but to make a realistic picture you just need a camera and you've created something more realistic than any artist will ever replicate so I don't consider pure realism to be art. The point is that you're conveying emotion and meaning without stating it.
