We had the same happen when my brother accessed the wrong kind of site and we got a shitton of viruses and malware. We just spent 100 bucks on a really good malware etc. cleaner.
Before that, we had a virus, was incapable of buying the program so we just sent it in to a "computer doctor". He cleaned it up for much cheaper.
No matter how much protection, no matter how good the anti-virus suit, it will make no difference if the idiot behind the keyboard still goes around clicking random links or willingly puts himself at risk.
It's like having all the protection in the world against landmines and then running blindly into a minefield.
What I suspect the "Computer Doctor" did was run the same or another anti-virus suit on your computer, "fixed" the problem and then charged you 50 bucks for it.
