Anyone else freaked out about the modern internet?

I'm posting this here because its really the only forum I peruse still.
I was thinking about how much we have lost with the current corporate controlled state of the internet. Growing up, I remember being able to search something up and find actual relevant results to my query. A lot of those results were dangerous, but it was very interesting to have access to such a wealth of unique content.
Now, with the accelerated development of generative AI systems, its gotten even worse. Bot accounts are more convincing, anybody can "make" their own art, generate videos, impersonate voices, etc.
Then you got the government overreach on top of it all. How many times has the USA tried to destroy internet freedoms through SOPA, PIPA, and even that rearly draft of SESTA? Now Canada is trying to do it too; their conservative party wants to force adult websites to require government ID. Its another one of those "think of the children" scams meant to normalize government supervised internet access. Whenever a government wants to be evil, they always use sex and violence as a scapegoat.
Feel free to share your thoughts about how absurd things have gotten. I really miss how liberating the internet used to feel before big tech got its grubby hands on everything.

It's gone downhill in a lot of ways, but so has the whole world. I started using the internet in the mid 90s, and back then it was such a mysterious place, and so many personal websites. I even made a few myself on Geocities. Good times.

I'm just mad that it's so hard to find what I want with search engines instead trying to "guess" (see: tell me) what I want instead. Worst form of thought control that everyone ignores.

People wonder why the high seas still exist it's because even the legal Market is still lacking and you can't really blame publishers because they have limited money for a vast sea of content yet to be adapted.
Then again I have a serious problem with Crunchyroll so maybe I'm more biased I kind of wish they fired their adapters because the translations are so god-awful I understand you have to localize and stuff but damn the patriarchy and susy. I actually see some Merit in AI because now they can translate it then do some quality control on the translations and maybe fix some problem with the voice actors political and social narratives. I mean that AI voiced with the actual voice actors voice of MS cobyoshi was actually hilarious.

Enshittification is inevitable where larger corporations are concerned, the bottom line is revenue. It's why I get worried when a studio or company gets bought by one or goes public, because they too have to start behaving the same way. But Google enshittifying the one thing that put them on the map to begin with, its search engine, is both hilarious and sad.
I also haven't liked the trend of people chasing the next exploitable grift (NFTs, AI, DEI) and shoving it down our throats until we have no gag reflex left.
I've seriously questioned the moral compass of every celebrity that actively pushed NFTs, in my mind they showed their true colours.
Deja-vu.
The UK tried the exact same thing with us a few years back, right down to the "think of the "children" reasoning for it. I've never understood how inconveniencing everyone because of the presence of kids on the internet was a good justification, especially because parental controls exist and should be used. But I digress; they would have required everyone to provide an ID to a third party to allow them to view adult content. It passed a bunch of checks but it was eventually shelved after concerns about the third party, which was MindGeek, potentially storing too much information and selling it off, which would have been a gigantic violation of GDPR laws - and the fact VPNs exist plus a bunch of other undisclosed technical issues. I could make a few guesses as to what those were.
If Canada's politicians have any common sense they'd see this too and abandon it altogether. It's a lot of effort and a gigantic money pit, and the only one that wins is whoever gets people's private information. Nobody in their right mind should want this. Which is why it should ultimately fail.
However on a seperate occasion they did succeed in banning female ejaculation in British porn 10 years ago because it was successfully considered a kink.
There's a joke to be made there about the bedroom inadequacies of whoever passed that.
