Convert sunlight energy and sugar into car fuel?

It's not just about putting a certain plant gene into yeast cells to produce a Malaria medicine, scientists are attempting to create a self-maintaining, self-replicating cell from scratch... and that's just the first step!

well.. solar energy is quite.. expesive to impliment. alright its free once you make the energy system but the energy conversion isnt.. worth it. not no mention maintance costs.. the most efficient energy source right now would be fuel rods. not those green energy blasts from halo mind you..
it breaks down hydrogen gas to get energy, then converts the hydrogen ions into water.. if you keep diverting some energy to break down the water.. you get hydrogen gas again.. i'm not too sure how it fully works though..

Currently solar pannels only catch about 15% of the spectrum of light. Solar panels can only catch a small fragment of visible light.
Currently, there is research on creating more effective ways to absorb the spectrum so more energy can be captured and used. At the moment ultra violent,infra red and the rest of the visible spectrum are eluding current technology. The current goals are to increase the total amount of captured sunlight to 45% which would make solar panels 3x times more efficient. At the current efficiency a panel will pay for itself in several years (close to a decade). Once they reach their current goal a panel will pay for itself in several months almost a fifth of the time it originally took. Don't quote me on exact numbers (Don't quote me on everything exactly I'm recalling from memory)

if plants can utilize the light energy from the sun, why can't we make a biomachine that will use sunlight and sugar to produce octane?
there's some research going on about it... actually, i posted this on a whim right after reading about it on Newsweek :P
and lately, it's been giving me some inspiration: instead of a future with metal and microchips, we might just have something like cars that can maintain themselves and PC's that hardly break down; instead of cybernetic implants, we could have some bioengineered enhancements instead
and of course, a perfect human body made out of scratch
like Newsweek would coin it "Live 2.0", i'd like to have something like "Human 2.0"
well, it makes a great idea for a novel or manga and could be a little ecchi too (like Persocoms from Chobits)
anyway, it's a path different from circuit boards and silicon chips, it's basically restructuring the DNA... more like making it from scratch
every living thing on Earth was based off from one thing, like it was open-source, lots of data get piled up and some unnecessary ones get left behind, resulting in a not-so-efficient organism
basically, the new technology currently under development is trying to create an organism that would preform a certain function without wasting too much energy in doing other things

I would just LOVE to have a car fueled by Pixie Stix. Then I can claim that my car and I run on the same fuel. :)
People are naturally curious, and experimentation comes with that. We have to know what our limits are, but even when we find them, we have to surpass them. Bioengineering has its upsides, but downsides too.
Of course, if they can bioengineer me a replacement KNEE that doesn't require frequent maintenance, I will never speak a bad word of scientists again.
