The same genetics would result in the same physical problems. All you are doing is hitting the reset button. Genetic manipulation would be the best solution to the problem that I can currently think of but, it's messing with your genetics.
Cancer is really tough, and I'm sorry to hear about your dog.
So many people die of cancer these days because we've become so good at combating so many other diseases. From a probability standpoint, eventually, cell break down and genetic replication errors occur. I think one of the most promising technologies against cancer would be programmable nanobots, but we aren't there yet. Light treatment and viral tagging have shown some promise, but it's a hard problem.
