I have decided to expand the topic to the topic of censorship as a whole. With that expanded focus in mind, i ask fakku a broader question. Is the amount of sex and or violence in the media really as bad as it is portrayed top be? And do you believe that censorship helps children like it claims to?
The reason i ask is because to me foreign films seem to have more sex and violence in them than in American films. Yet it seems children and young people in America are the ones having trouble if the high homicide and teen pregnancy rates are any indication.
I personally believe that the problem is America is that young people are not sperating reality from fiction, for whatever reason. I mean, i see kids all the time wanting to be "Gangstas" because of most mainstream rappers, and i wonder do they actually realize what that entails?
I personally believe that fpods solution of parents doing the censoring themselves with products like V chip would be much more effective than leaving it to the government. My dad let me watch pretty much anything(including R rated and Pg-13 movies), but on the condition that i would watch it with him(obviously now that i'm older he is comfortable with me seeing r rated movies by without him). This is so he would be there to talk to me about anything i saw.
I have grown up with a understanding of the difference between fiction and reality, and i usually enjoy watching movies with my dad anyways.
Being exposed to violent material has nothing to do with it.
As far as I see it, Americans are the most self-righteous, pigheaded lot of humans I've ever met. You're always sure that you're right, you always loudly demand your "rights", and never for a moment even consider calmly if you could be in the wrong.
When the later *does* happen you beg forgiveness and try to laugh if off (cheap grace). However what's even worse is that a lot of you finds being affirmed - that the other guy was wrong and you're right - a permission to go all out in abuse and make the other guys life a living hell.
Finally you have a great degree of ingrained fear, and baseless fearfulness in the lot of you, so you jump at any stimulation and bark and bite like a small over-bred cocker spaniel where everything is big and loud and terrifies him to his bones.
So let me sum it up: hypocrisy (loud and vehement punishment of wrongdoers, didactic self assurance that one is always in the right), ingrained fear.
