Is a number review system accurate?

We see reviewers summing up their thoughts and feelings in movies, books, games, anime etc in the form of number system such as a 1-10 system, and the 5 star system.
So we use numbers to define how strong or weak something is to ourselves and others. Yet is this an effective way to review things? Certainly I can see the logic of using a number system to judge on sports such as high diving, but over entertainment I don't see the use for it.
I would like to hear some thoughts about this. Why is a number system good or bad? How would you make a system that would make each of your review equal to the other in judging? Is it even possible to be unbiased when you review something? Though I think my main question is this: Is a number/star scale effective in showing our thoughts over a certain piece of entertainment?

No, but it's convenient and it can get the point across easily. It's like right and wrong, even though there's no such thing as right and wrong.

The answer comes from the lack of time to answer a survey or a lack of means to do so.
After reading a long text or let us say, going through a long process, or watching a movie, most people don't have either the time, the means or the desire to write down their exact feelings for what they have just experienced, or have experienced in the past.
It is just a process to speed things up, a little like when you ask someone "How are you doing?" and he answers "Good, I'm doing fine." It a generality to sum up what he has been experiencing.

Of course not. No way can a number describe the nuances of something so complicated. A number is just a quick and dirty overall view. In some cases, its absolutely necessary, because an in depth review will very likely contain spoilers.
Which is why the better critics leave a discussion as to why they left such a number. You want the details, read the review rather than just the number.
And yes, it it impossible to be 100% without bias when it comes to entertainment. What one person may find entertaining, another person may not.

A number communicates an overall impression well enough. It is best utilized, however, along with a longer written review. That way the review can be 'scaled' with the numbers. At least thats what I do, heh

[color=#2e1a6b]It's accurate, just not very descriptive. As a means of critic's feedback, it's not very good, since critics are expected to be more detailed. But as a means of user feedback, it's quick, effective, and capable of analyzing large amounts of reviews. It's much better than a like/dislike system, as those are just a popularity contest.

The reason for this is that everyone has a different idea of what a score of 1 should be attached to and vice versa with scores of 10. For instance, i have come across some great manga that has been scored at a 2 before now. While i have also come across some, that have been utterly rubbish and people have tagged them at a 10.
The reason that i use the number system myself is that i don't want to make huge, scrolling posts that no-one is going to read and end up wasting the webiste owners server space. [/h]

[color=red]As Buster said, number systems are flawed because there is no medium for comparison that everyone accepts. Thus, everyone's number review will represent something different. Plus, with the 1-10 number review system, one would think 5 would be the middle, but people tend to rate things according to educational standards where a 70% is passable and it goes up or down from there.
I think the system that Youtube, Google, and other sites have set up is a good review system that accommodates our culture of rapid information consumption. If you like something, you like it. If you dislike it, you dislike it. If you don't really have anything to input, you do neither. You can do it on the fly and you don't have to spend any real thought on it. After a general period of time, the likes and dislikes coalesce into a "general" opinion. The downside is that you don't get a scale of comparison between the different poles, simplifying the whole review. Plus, people tend to only like the things they are involved in (why else would one be involved in it), and tend to only dislike things when they feel like trolling. The rest of the time they are neutral.
But, at the end of the day, every review system is going to be inherently flawed because its just a means to judge what an individual feels and is completely subjective towards anyone else. In summary:[/color] [color=green]>opinions[/color]
