Hm..I've been wondering about this, is war really that bad? I mean, sure the deaths caused by war is tragic. But without war, many medical/technology advancements wouldn't exist. Is war really bad?

War is horrific in my opinion, medicine and such would advance WITHOUT people feeling the need to kill each other. All war really benefits is weapons manufacturers and sadist bloodthirsty people. I can see no justification for the practice besides, it tends to kill of the idiots who started it which is a good thing i guess.

Yes, it is that bad. Especially since war became such a lucrative industry. That said, I will admit that science has advanced by leaps and bounds because of it. All the knowledge in the world does not justify the sacrifices that are made however. And to those who believe it would have advancef either way, think again. The cold war was basically a technology and espionage race, and the discoveries and experiments made by the nazies would have never happened without war--since their immoral and relentless practices were not limited by morals like our current scientists are.

Technological and medical developments will happen all the same even without war; don't you know that the most advanced technologies on the globe belong mostly to the military? Think of the many civilian technologies that could have been developed/refined IF NOT for military technology. If we've got a pistol, chances are they're already experimenting with homing bullets.

War is a funny thing.
Like others have said it is a horrible thing for humans to do to each other. Pick any war that has ever happened, all of them are historical proof of what a human can do. The scientific advancements that you say were a direct result of a war would have happened anyways. The war just acted as a catalyst.
On the other hand, I like the strategy involved in war. Strategy games are my favorite genre, specifically Empire: Total War. Things like pre-emptive strikes, deception, sabotage, diplomacy, multi-front battles, out flanking an enemy position and watching them crumble I absolutely enjoy. I love the feeling of watching an enemy suffocate then retreat in a gas/chemical attack. I enjoying learning a new method when I lose and using that to defeat my enemy. (Starting to sound like that guy from Hellsing.) My point is that, if everyone fighting wasn't a person and only an emotionless programmed object that will do my bidding without thinking and no one would be unhappy if he/she died, I and probably a few other people would love war.

As long as you are winning, it will pump money into the economy via captured resources, strengthen national pride in the masses, and depending on who was defeated make a country a bit more terrifying in the eyes of everyone else. But all of that is on paper. The reality is that no amount of human life is worth it. If war was a liquid it would be tar; nasty, sticky, evil, and toxic.

No, war is terrible but it's going to happen no matter what at some point in time.
As Randumb said, competition, or even the mere threat of war e.g. the cold war, can provide the incentive to advance technologies. If we could all live like Gandhi maybe war wouldn't be a necessity but as long as there are greedy selfish people in power, war will always exist.

You really don't need to experience war first hand to realize its long lasting effects. Besides, development in war time would most likely only refer to weapons development and strengthening of military resources. And if you're thinking that there can be vicarious benefits derived from war, I'm sorry but I'm afraid I can't yield to that, it's negative effects would over shadow the so called benefits that you would derive from it, the main objective of war after all is to cripple the resources and livelihood of another country.
