Day light savings is really pointless. The original point of it was to give farmers more time to work with light. Now a day the government claims that it saves power (electricity) and resources. I could see that but I wonder what the net effects of it would be considering people would be out more if there was more light.
It was actually invented by William Willett because he saw that many Londoners slept through the best part of summer days. He also enjoyed golf and didn't like when his games were cut short by dusk. So, he proposed Daylight Savings Time, but it wasn't accepted by Parliament. During WWI, Germany, its allies, and its occupied nations were the first to adopt DST for wartime purposes in 1916. The enactment gradually spread throughout Europe throughout 1917 and the United States enacted it in 1918.
There were forms of it in ancient Rome and 18th century Europe, however at that time there was no accurate time scheduling, so it wasn't until rail transport and communication networks came about requiring a standardization of time.
