I think that a lack of real industry makes a so called 'functional' society go bad.
Hard but fair work creates a sense of pride and honour in people, The reason why theres so much apathy in western countries right now is because real work is practically non existant... When you can barely hang onto a job cleaning toilets or working on a temporary contract for some call center and every day some new scandal is coming out about a bunch of city trader rich kids and their fat cat bosses getting away with absolute MURDER you tend to get complacent about the "BIG" society you're working for.
You start to question why you should bother trying anymore, You get complacent which is totally understandable.
I also think that the education system and the way my generation has been brought up has basically squashed the life out of us, When I was in school I was taught to do the bare minimum, to keep my head down and not to make a fuss.
