When drug stings target the wrong people.

So I just came across this article talking about how a high schoolers parents are suing the school for allowing undercover officers to coerce him into buying weed in order to arrest him and whoever the dealer was.

Here's my issue with this-this kid has Aspergers syndrome among other mental conditions, and couldn't interact well with anyone else, and yet he was still targeted by law enforcement for this sting. I'm so mad I'm at a loss for words. This is bullying on a larger scale to me. They single this kid out because he was different, coerce him into buying weed, and then arrest him. Given this kids mental state, this is going to be hard for him to bounce back from. Imagine, meeting someone who will hang out with you no matter what condition you have, then, trying to be a good friend, you buy him some weed after he talks you into it. Next thing you know, you're arrested and everything you know turns out to be a lie-your 'friend' is really a cop and now you face expulsion and jail. Then, when you get let off from prison with only 20 hours of community service, you return to school only to be targeted by the staff and face constant suspensions and possible expulsion once more. This can't be good for him, especially given his mental conditions.

What really gets me is that I know that before a sting is set-up, they do research on the person(s) to be involved, so they knew that he had a mental condition, and still went on with it and they had the help of the school and the school board. This is absolutely sickening to me.

You know what's funny about this? I used to go to that school. Graduated 2 years ago in fact.

I wouldn't put it past the Riverside officers doing that though. They're pretty bored as hell, because nothing happens here in Temecula. It's a sleepy town where the majority of residents are upper-middle class Republicans.

I find it to be really awful, but what can you do?

The fact that they targeted someone and set them up is horrible though. That's not the point of drug stings. That's like if you blackmail someone into stealing and then turn him in to the police. The worst part about it, is that the person doing the blackmailing was the police.

That does sound weird, isn't the point of stings is to not catch the little fish but to go up the chain,but that does sound like entrapment if thats how it really played out,how did they even decide to see if they could catch him,and since this kid has said mental conditions i would've though they would have a better eye on their son knowing of their child's mental state.

I think too many people in authority are still paranoid about pot and/or working with the privatized prison industry. Its ridiculous so much of our law enforcement is so focused on this when there are much more harmful crimes being committed.

I'd say it depends on the situation.

In that particulat situation, yes, it was a bit of an overstepping of the bounds on the police's part. They should have done some research on the kid, and taken that into account. plus, he should'nt have been a target, only a link in the chain back up to the dealer.

But these "sting" operations have the benefit of catching the pseudo-root of the drug dealing in the school targeted when they succeed, protecting non-consumer students from the drug dealer's presence and influence.

So I'd say it's a give give situation, though I agree that these situations shouldn't happen.

It really doesn't surprise me that cops would do this shit. I think the most upsetting aspect of cases like this, is that a lot of cops know it's wrong, but the only choice they have is to go along with it, or lose their jobs. The private sector has been given so much influence in judicial matters that the integrity of law has taken a backseat to making a profit. More and more public prisons are being closed and replaced by prisons owned by private companies that make a profit based upon filling quotas.

It's not gone from the DSMV, it was reclassified as being on the autism spectrum.
