Why do people vote only for people they know in MOTE MOTE?

Was it not meant to be a competition of looks rather than personality? I see all these people saying 'I voted this cause she's nicer' or 'I voted this cause I know her'. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression the contest was based on looks/hotness? So far, all of the characters I've voted for are the ones I find the hottest (through google image research, I personally think sometimes the vote pictures give a bad impression), and often the one I vote for is hotter than the one I know through watching their series.

The meaning of MOTEMOTE. MOTEMOTE means, in a nutshell, 'sexy in the sense that makes you idolize them'. Basically, it's the look that makes you say, 'wow, she's so pretty', and not the 'MOE~' or the 'I need to ram her hard now' look.
In other words, it is the sum of the characters looks and personalities that encourage us to make our choices.

I'm not based on "I know that character, that's why I choose her."
And It's not about the personality. Heck, I chose Lucy over Chii at MOTEMOTE #13. Even though I already know about her personality recently.
It's just, look at the picture next to the poll, and decide which is appealing based on that. (Or maybe you can just open the topic and look at the picture there)

Think of it this way. Have you ever noticed when you like someone that you would rate them at a higher level for physical appearance than you would if you didn't know them?
So someone you would normally rate a 6 if you liked them you would rate just their looks as a 8 or 9. You are trying to be objective but cannot as your decision is influenced by the way you feel about that person, even if you don't want it to be.
So basically we know the girls in the anime we watch and thus feel a stronger affinity for them and sometimes see them as more attractive than just seeing their picture for the first time.

That's it, essentially. It's like my doujin-reading habits; I don't read doujinshi of shows that I don't know because I don't find the characters all that interesting. I've got tons of Fate/Stay Night and Zero no Tsukaima doujins on my computer. Not all of them are much good, but I still like them better than, say, the Black Lagoon doujins featuring characters I've never seen before, no matter how good the artwork or storyline (assuming it's been translated and I can understand the story in the first place) are.
