Here's a list of indie, flash games that i picked up in my spare time. I seem to have alot of that these days...
Notrium
"Developed by Ville Mönkkönen in association with Michael Quigley AKA Quanrian.
Introduction
You have crash-landed on planet Notrium. Your food supplies are running low, a pack of predatory aliens have got your scent. There are no more bullets for your pistol, your only weapon a handful of rocks. The night is coming, and you are desperately looking for wood to make a fire. Notrium is a game of survival. Originally released in 2003."
Building on what the introduction says, you choose one of 4 different races that were aboard a ship that crashed on an unknown planet. Human(the capitan), Android(the mechanic), Alien (stowaway), Psy(Doctor i think it was). each have their strengths and faults such as the alien requires alot of food but has claws for weapons where as the other races have to build (or develop) their own etc. Which is what makes the game interesting. Its not a horror, or suspense, just survival. The environment can kill you, the aliens can kill you, waiting around will kill you eventually too because you can, run out of food or energy. If your a human or android, you scavenge for parts of other crashed ships and machines to build useful tools such as lasers, turrets, food pods, health pods etc. If you choose to be an alien you can start a colony of your own. If you choose a psy you unlock your powers as you travel around the planet. The point of the game besides surviving is to find a way off the planet, or not depending on your race.
The game, is ftp and is in its final release with the occasional patch every now and then. There are a couple of user created mods available on the main site as well if the original game gets stale, or you can create your own if you know what to do.
Currently the Developer is working on a new project called Driftmoon that is similar in survival game play to Notrium with a graphics upgrade, more features and a contemporary fantasy setting.

Other similar games to this would be :
Caravaneer - Another top down adventure/rpg game set in a post apocalyptic world where you play a man or woman who inherits your famous uncle's caravan and a some money, and you decide to follow in you uncle's foot steps to make a name for yourself. Basically its a toned down version of fallout (in genre and setting) with a mix of trading simulation, as you go from town to town buying and selling while fending off raiders. Or you can forget about trading and be a raider yourself.
this can be played on

Dead Frontier - Is also a top down adventure/rpg set in a post apocalyptic world except the world became that way from a zombie creating virus, and there is no "town to town trading". You start out and live in this (school?) complex and go out into the surrounding city to lvl up and to scavenge for better things. The game feels cool for the first 30min-hour or so but then you get the feeling "why bother going out of our fort at all?" and that kinda kills the game although at certain times in the day zombies attack the fort which kinda spices things up. if you like survivalish horrorish time killers that you can play with other ppl thing this could be worth a shot (the game is multiplayer and all)
the good news (or just news) is that the game is due for an graphics and gameplay overhaul sometime in June.

If you like sci-fi elements, Spacefaring, space combat and trading then these games might be of interest :
Escape Velocity Nova : http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/
Basically everything i said above but with a plot and its a single player game. quick over-view because im getting lazy:
"EV Nova is the third game in the Escape Velocity series, and is by far the most ambitious installment to date. With a completely redesigned gaming engine, EV Nova thrusts you into a sprawling universe dominated by a myriad of warring factions, each sharing a common bond, but so philosophically different as to make conflict inevitable."
This game is the only retail one i've mentioned, but i have played it *hint hint*. or you can search for it on some torrent site. since i don't think its nice to post any dl links for these games.
Naev : http://code.google.com/p/naev/
Similar to Escape Velocity, with a less grand plot design (your character feels more like your average joe/jane who becomes someone)
quick over-veiw because i am now lazy:
"NAEV is a 2D space trading and combat game, in a similar vein to Escape Velocity.
NAEV is played from a top-down perspective, featuring fast-paced combat, many ships, a large variety of equipment and a large galaxy to explore. The game is highly open-ended, letting you proceed at your own pace."
Theres also Star Sonata for those people who like the two games above without a plot and is multiplayer. However if your not a premium member you cant get past level 20.
