I've always wanted to try the first one out but I didn't.
I wouldn't mind buying the second one but if the story is a direct sequel...
Also I've always known castlevania for introducing vampire hunters, why is this one sucking blood?
The Lords of Shadow games take place in a different universe, so there are references, some of which are very similar and/or direct like Rinaldo Gandolfi crafting the whip and Vampire Killer in Lament of Innocence and someone with the same name making the Combat Cross and its upgrades in LOS or just an indirect/slight reference such as Dorin (the priest/merchant from the DS game, Portrait of Ruin) who was a nice guy, to Dorin in LOS being a selfish bastard who kept the Holy Water to himself and let the town get massacred by vampire since it was the only weapon that held them back.
Ending spoilers for LOS1 and the DLC chapters:
In LOS1, Gabriel Belmont ends up fighting Satan and stopping him for the time being. However, throughout his quest, Gabriel began losing his more "humane" side and became a darker "hero" (as evidenced through his executions of enemies, becoming more and more brutal as you go through the game), at the end, he couldn't end up saving his dead wife. Turns out the Mask (the only reason why he set out on his quest) just lets you see through the eyes of God and doesn't really do much else, after believing that it will help him revive her. In return, for his misdeeds (probably for killing his Wife and Claudia), he has been granted eternal life, so he can never really be reunited with his wife.
Comes the DLC, turns out that with the Lords of Shadow dead, the Forgotten One can escape the prison they made for him. Laura warns Gabriel of its sheer power, but only evil beings can enter his prison. So Laura makes him suck her blood, to corrupt Gabriel enough and so she can die in peace, especially since she is alone without her mother. The Forgotten One is strong, but can only become stronger with the Power in the dimension he is trapped in. Gabriel fights him and it is somewhat of a close match. But the Forgotten One still "shrugs" at Gabriel.
Once the Forgotten One gets "bored" of the fight (even though Gabriel gave him a good beat down), he tries to get the power, but Gabriel beats him to it. Thus transforming Gabriel into something far greater than the Forgotten One himself and possibly more than the Lords of Shadow combined. He annihilates the Forgotten One without trying.
In LOS1, there was an epilogue after the credits, showing a very pale Gabriel and accepting his fate, still angry that he has been given eternal life, he has taken the name Dracul. This whole scene takes place in modern day.
So it looks like Gabriel accepted his fate a bit after the DLC as evidenced by the trailer for LOS2.
So yes, we are going to end up playing as Dracula in LOS2.
So far there is no "Vampire Killer" whip like in the old games (which only the Belmont family could wield with no problems as opposed to the Morris family), so all the characters so far have been using a sort of whip and it looks like it is going to be the main form of attack, even for Gabriel.
The game looks like it takes place some time after the DLC in LOS1 ends, there is also a 3DS game "Mirror of Fate" takes 25 years after LOS1 ends. Supposedly LOS2 takes place after MoF. MoF stars Trevor Belmont, the supposed child that Gabriel never knew and Simon Belmont, who is a descendent of Trevor.
I'm a huge Castlevania fan, so pardon my long explanations.
EDIT: Here is an article on the 3DS game:
